AS SSK Install Question.
I am putting the SSK in today. Not as hard as I thought. Oh, the 'Spawn of Satan' clip was easy. Took all of three minutes....
One issue I think I have or it may not be an issue. When I put the assembly back in the car, the shift lever is not centered with the hole in the chassis. It is way too far forward. Is this correct or is something else amiss? The new carrier arm that they send is exactly the same dimensions as the old one. |

You found the DIY I was looking at already (hence "spawn of satan" clip), and the one on Billswebspace reuses the stock carrier. Have you tried contacting Ian? He did his own SSK install, and IIRC it was the AS version. RobMCoupe may have done his AS SSK himself too, not sure though.
So, just so I understand fully, the new carrier is positioned the same as stock? (Same dimensions, probably a "duh"), but I'm asking the obviously here. In the DIY on Bill's Webspace, he notes how it's possible to have the lever itself oriented wrong. Is it possible that's the issue? I could be really missing the boat, but I guess I'll ask anyway. Edit: Looked at my kit, not possible to have the issue Bill's Webspace noted with the AS. Last edited by Finnegan; 11-11-2012 at 02:28 PM.. |

Just took the assembly back out of the car. That took all of seven minutes...
Did a visual compare to the old carrier, same part numbers.... Put it back in and the issue fixed itself... What was the issue, who knows... Works now. The large rubber boot took about two minutes to install. Now to put all the removed interference back on the car. The secret to the 'Spawn of Satan' is to use a small screwdriver on the flat side of the coupler. This pops off the retaining ring in nothing flat. I used a Phillips bit to start pushing the pin out. Then a piece of copper wire (12ga) and the pin just fell out. If all the interference is removed, I could pull the assembly out of the car in less than 30min. |

Yay!!!
I guess the lesson here is that if this issue pops up during install, remove, give it a hard stare, put it back! You know, now that you've done it I think I'm going to give installing this myself a shot. The DIY here is pretty clear (and I've taken the exhaust from section I back off before) so what the hell, I'll try it on my car first before 'Kitty's car. Thank you for the coupler tips. Let us know what you think once you test it out! |

Glad to hear you solved the problem.
....hard to fathom what the issue might have been.

Now I have to put the interference back on.
Do you mate the center exhaust section to the X-pipe the put up as one unit or do you do it separately? |

I assemble on the ground and put it up as a unit.
It's HMUCH easier to get to the top bolt between Sect1 & the X pipe.

I will try that first.
I took it down in sections. If you used a curved box end wrench, the top hardware is very easy... I looked at it and make a quick run to Harbor Freight. $14.99 for a set of metric curved wrenches... Cheap but they got the job done. |

Shipkiller,
Did you take the guibo off when you did your install? It looks like it would make connecting the selector rod to the tranny easier. I was looking under my car yesterday to see what other parts I might need for the install. Also did you take off the exhaust from section I back to the mufflers? |

No, I did not touch the driveshaft.
I did not want to remove the Guibo since that will introduce some reassembly alignment issues to be addressed and I did not what to get into that, but you can unbolt the driveshaft from the Guibo which then you would not have the Guibo to transmission alignment sleeve issues, but you still have to do the same thing at the differential. Why make work for yourself unless you really need it? There is plenty of room to work. Yes, you have to remove the exhaust from the mufflers all the way to the header. |
