rub issues
Recently installed a set of 18x8.5" et38 wheels with 245/40 tires on the front of my 3.0i with the sport suspension and am having rubbing issues.
The very edge of the tire rubs on the very outside edge of the inner fender liner when I go over large bumps. I thought I was in the clear, but it seems i was wrong. If I go to the stock 225/40 on the 8.5" wheel will I alleviate my problem? It appears I need ~1/4"-3/8" more clearance. The alternative would be to trim the inner fenderwell piece, but I believe that it is somewhat "structural" since the front bumper mounts to it. Any suggestions? |

Sounds like your setup is close but just over the edge. I've got the sport suspension with 18x8.5 40et fronts with the oe 225/40 tires and have no rub at all. Dubbedown's setup as he mentions, barely rubs. Another consideration is tread width since it sounds like that's where you're rubbing. Check the tire specs as some manufacturers have a wider tread then others for a given size tire.
Without a wheel change, you need to be careful with the tire's overall diameter and tread width.

Thanks guys. I thought I had done my due diligence but evidently one of my measurements was messed up or I mis-interpreted some data.
The 245/40 General Exclaim UHP that I put on has a cross sectional width of 9.8". The 235 is still at 9.5" but the 225 is 9.0". According to tirerack, the RE050 225 has a sectional width of 9.1". Unfortunately General Tire doesn't list tread width. Since it's my summer daily driver, I'll probably step the tire down to the original 225/40. Anybody want a good deal on 2 very lightly used General Exclaim UHP 245/40-18's? |

Got home tonight and took off the new wheels to re-install my 107's and runflats. Took some pics so people in the future looking to run this setup will know what to expect. It seems that it's more of a height issue than a width issue, though the combination of a wider/taller wheel is a bad combination. The 225 wheel should be ~1" narrower and 0.4" shorter.
First pic shows the tire/wheel in the wheelwell. Again, these are 18x8.5" et38 with 245/40's: The wheelwell fill from the front, looks like it should fit: Here is the end result of ~100 miles of driving: Here's my rear setup which fits excellent. 18x9.5" et41 with 265/40's (yes, I know there's no center cap): I'll be ordering the 225/40 replacements tonight and hopefully I'll soon be back on my summer wheels. |
