Removing secondary air pump?

Is this the thing you need to be able to eliminate your secondary air pump?

http://store.vacmotorsports.com/vac-...ete-p1744.aspx

I'm curious, as the air pump is an emmisions piece that weights about 5lbs, that just pumps air into the primary cats (which I've eliminated with the euro headers). Apparently you'll throw a code without it, so I'll do it with my next upgrade/tune

EDIT: see page 3 for install of blocking plate. no codes thrown. 4.25 lbs saved

It will probably throw a code.

From what I've read, it will. But I'm still very interested in simplifying my engine bay.

I'll get this removed and code removed when I do my 10psi pulley/injectors/custom tune this spring

IIRC some russian guy that ran a z4 turbo in the moscow unlimited had this part removed too..

Yes thats what you need.

Same thing as on a 2002 vw gti turbo that I removed the secondary pump as well.

If Evolve would delete the code for me I would remove as well.

^ that would be good to know.

That VAC plate seem expensive for what it is.
Shouldn't be too hard to mfg as a DIY

if this can be deleted and cause no issues.... may as well drop the weight, think its a great idea and something else removed that could cause issues down the line...

Great idea tom....

Plus, it would eliminate that annoying suction sound when the car is cold. This mod is definitely on my to-do list.

Mine failed so Instead of buying one I installed a secondary air pump simulator..The pump is still attached tho..too lazy to remove it.

I am certain there is a way to turn off the light trough DIS/GT1 have yet to find out how!

40 bucks is a lot of money for that cover!

whats an air pump simulator??

well it seems their is a BMW block of piece :-)
also this only does something at cold start.... would still like to get rid however, it would make a great ready made holder for something else :-)

The secondary air pump simulator...simulates increased o2 flow trough your o2 sensor (simulating a blowing pump) for the first 30 seconds after starting the car only in cold weather temperature. That is the only time the pump does anything.

then after that time it restores normal o2 sensor input.

so the ecu senses the pump doing it's job and goes on happily ever after

here is a thread I made about it

http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthre...&highlight=sap

You can buy one on ebay or make your own for 25 bucks...it involves connecting a wire to your sap and cutting your o2 sensor to insert dummy data.

I have removed the secondary air pump/EGR valve a little bit after I did the CSL headers install this summer and no CEL. Maybe because I already have a flash software with the ESS VT1-445

I think you should try Zstig, pretty sure you don't need a reflash with your ESS setup. Anyway, even if it throw a code, the car will still work fine.

And please don't pay for the VAC cover. DIY! It's super easy to do with a drill and a grinder with cutting disc. Just use a piece of 1/4'' SS flat bar and put some hi-temp silicone to do a gasket. Use the OEM nut that are already there to hold the flange the EGR valve and also use that flange to get the shape to cut. It will look like this in the end:

Look clean under the hood also!

After reading all the threads on this, it seems this thing does.... Nothing basically after startup!!!!. This would be a great place to mount a meth/water pump, then use a SS tank to mount close by.
I'm just going to leave this SAP in place however, if it fails ever then ill just remove it.

Yes no problem with idle at cold start.

I removed the secondary air pump on my E46 M3 back in 2008 without any software reflash and it does throw a code but that's it, didn't feel any difference when starting the car.

The SAP is there only to shoot some air so the cats warm up faster and are more efficient.

When I installed CSL headers last summer on my car, I didn't got a CEL either.

Now that I moved to my new place, WITH a garage, I'm gonna try this out on my free time. Very good to know that it won't likely throw a code!

Definition of what it does: http://www.unofficialbmw.com/images/...lectronic3.pdf

"Secondary Air Injection is required to reduce HC and CO emissions while the engine is warming up. Immediately following a cold engine start (-10 to 40°C) fresh air/oxygen is injected directly into the exhaust stream. The temperature signal is provided to the ECM by the Air Temperature Sensor in the HFM. The ECM provides a ground circuit to activate the Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay. The relay supplies voltage to the Secondary Air Injection Pump. The single speed pump runs for approximately 90 seconds after engine start up. * Below -10º C the pump is activated briefly to “blow out” any accumulated moisture. Secondary Air Injection Monitoring is performed by the ECM via the use of the pre-catalyst oxygen sensors. Once the air pump is active and is air injected into the exhaust system the oxygen sensor signals will indict a lean condition. If the oxygen sensor signals do not change within a predefined time a fault will be set and identify the faulty bank(s). After completing the next cold start and a fault is again present the “Malfunction Indicator Light” will be illuminated."

I'd also be interested in removing this assuming my tune doesn't give a CEL. I'll check on it...

Keep us posted Zstig,I would think if it works on your car it would work on mine
assuming that we go the same tune from ESS.
