New 2018 Z4 - official concept pics
BMW has released official concept pics of the 2018 Z4 (and 8 series).
The proposed Z4 concept sadly does not do it for me: there is nothing about it that says Z4 to me. The long front bonnet is gone, the seating position has moved forward (just like any other car), it looks very American muscle car to me (rather than European classy), and the whole car has become far too big. The only things I like are: * the new front grille (but that's really a copy of Mercedes A class) * the integration of the LCD display Not sure if this design misfortune makes me happy or sad: on the one hand, it is disappointing not to see something more satisfying under that badge name we all love; and on the other hand, makes me happy to have my E86 Z4 coupe which I think is becoming more and more of a classic with time. I really like it and the press so far has been highly positive with some saying that all other roadsters look dull by comparison.
A while back the survival of the Z4 was in doubt and now we have a return to a canvas top performance car. I think it will be a big success but let's give it a chance. |

I wonder how they hope to compete against Jaguar and Mercedes with a turbo 4 when those cars have at least V6 and at most V8 and V12 motivation -- and the attendant sounds. It's a better looking car than I expected but I have reservations about its chances for success.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Also agree with the comment about the headlights looking a bit Infiniti or Lexus or some such thing. Hopefully, that will get a tweak. The other interesting snippet in the press is that, as this is a joint project with Toyota, to differentiate between the Toyota version (Supra) and the BMW version, ... apparently, Toyota's version will be a COUPE and Toyota will NOT offer a roadster version. By that logic, it seems to suggest that BMW will only offer a roadster version ... no coupé ! |

The arrangement between BMW and Toyota was made public a while back. I started following this in early 2016 to get some idea of what the next Z4 might be like In any case you are correct that the terms of the arrangement are that BMW's car will be the roadster and Toyota will get the coupe. |

I like it a lot by now. Looks really fresh. Doesn't bother me that it's very different, the older ones are still here to enjoy Don't think I'll be buying though. No doubt it'll be much faster, just not sure the experience/sounds will be any better. Will need to drive it to confirm, but I have a feeling the //M is a keeper for life!

I share that concern also, although BMW have stated that the new car will be "about" the same price as the E89. To me, that means within 5%. Any more than 5% is not "about the same price". I guess we'll see.
However, I think BMW needs to be very careful here if they want this car to sell. The E89 was a sales disappointment and as a result, I think fans of the competition are loyal and entrenched. It will take a car that has looks and performance at a great price to get them to move to the G29.

I think there are a lot of little details to like on the concept car. It would be great if the production car didn't need door handles. And, if they would get away with the tiny side mirrors. The windshield frame looks WAY too small for rollover purposes. I don't think any of those will make the production car.
I do like the look in general and I like the roll hoops/cowlings. The wheels look nice, so do the air curtain vents on the sides. I am a sucker for an all-leather interior too. I don't care for frozen anything colors of paint. I like shiny cars. I can possibly be persuaded to like the all-digital dashboards as I am sure they will be standard soon, but I hate, hate, hate the tach that revs up counterclockwise, like the current Aston Martins. It feels like you would have to re-train yourself to read it, although I am sure the HUD will show it or at least have shift lights.
