Educate me on Houston

I'd like to know more about the city and its neighborhoods to know where the decent neighborhoods.

Eventually I'd like to get an 1800+ sq feet house, 2+ bedrooms, 2 car garage, pool, and up to about $220k price

SW - Sugarland, NW - Champions forest, inner loop - White oak.. Those are good looking surburban neighborhoods minus the Inner loop one. If you are in your 20's or 30's i highly recommend White oak since you will be in the heart of Houston. You will be right by the Galleria and Downtown with all access to freeways surrounding you. If you have a family and kids i recommended Championis forest or sugarland but it is about a 20-30 minute drive to get into town. Traffic on 610 is a Bia and I-10 is a whopping 14 lanes. If you are a young professional the hot thing in houston are townhomes in cottage grove or rice military. Gentrification hasn't kicked in all the way so you will have $300+ town homes next to a shack that cost $40k

Go to HAR.com and you can put in your parameters and see what pops up.
Feel free to PM me for any specific questions about an area. As you may know Houston does not have zoning so you can have an interesting cross section of residential and business. There are many master planned communities which are very nice. But I would certainly want to live near where I work. And if by water you mean the Gulf of Mexico then you might want to live on the south side of town to be even closer.

Go to Houston because F1 is coming to Austin 2012 for the "Circut of Americas" I think it is called. You know after they are done it would be perfect for open track days and such...

We can always use more Z4Ms in Texas. We need to have a SA/DFW/Houston/Austin meet up this year.

Texas Zfest

That was to the meet up of Houston, Austin and DFW leaving SA out of it altogether =-(. just teasing...

SA is closer to Corpus Christi / Port Aransas about two hours away. Closer to South Padre for spring break . Houston does have Baytown and the NHRA event though. I only like SA better because there are no toll roads lol

1. I'm guessing the 'water' being referred to is the gulf because the only other distinguishable body of water around Houston would be the ship channels, and they're really not that great a place to swim, jetski or fish. Seriously though, if you're talking about it's proximity to the gulf and I can assure you, as much as I love places like Galveston, the northern parts of the gulf would never remind you of Ft. Lauderdale. It has it's charm, but apples and oranges to the Ft. Not to mention, if you live on the north side of Houston I can easily imagine a 3 hr drive to go 60 miles. lol

2. Re Z3/Z4 events, I'm hearing that it looks like there will be another Spring Drive. New planners, but all of them have been doing the drive for the last dozen years so I expect a similar schedule (meet in Kerrville on Friday, 300 mile or so drive on Saturday, dinner that evening then the bar or socializing with others at the pool). Good time.

I've been on the west Florida coast, and thought the beach was...acceptable. Didn't visit Houston's beaches. Thx for the heads up

Clear Lake, Seabrook, or Kemah. Access to Galveston Bay. Easy access to the gulf. The water quality might not be as nice as Florida but the summer offshore fishing blows many places away. King and Spanish mackerel are crazy as well as ling/cobia and dorado. Shark is also good.

When I was there several years ago it carried the prestigious title of being America's highest ranking accidents per capita ! And it seemed to be true as evidenced via all the busy cops and cars along side the road. I also felt the presence of officers that were crooked. Just my opinion of course.

I was pulled over. Then later witnessed/listened to, the same cop school 3 more uniformed motorcycle cops the most fun way to nail unsuspecting drivers and be clean to fine them.....all just in earshot of my hotel room. Odd coincidence I thought.

Well if that's your definition of "crooked" then yeah, most all cops are crooked everywhere.
