need to change the diff fluid..; to remove the drain plug, is it hex socket size 14mm?:

I think it is yes.
Hex key 14mm that is.

(a 6pt socket is also sometimes called a hex socket but that won't fit obviously)

Yes. 14mm hex bit socket. I suggest you get new plugs. They are suppose to be one time use.
