RPI Volume

Hey Everybody,

So, I was looking at the RPI silencers thread and noticed that most if not all of the drivers complaining about the volume of the RPIs are roadster drivers. I'm considering getting these but have been concerned about the drone in the cabin. I drive a coupe, so are any of the coupe drivers having issues?

Thanks,
GT

No issues here. I sound deadened my trunk space cavities and love the sound.

Find someone to ride with before you buy. They are loud and the drone is unbearable at freeway speeds. It was less with my hardtop on, but think the loudest Harley you have heard.

Coupes are more prone to drone issues because it resonates off of the back window and into the cabin.

What you also need to look at is the rest of the exhaust system.
On my car with headers and DKF section 1 its WAY loud and drones about 3k rpm.
when pushing it beyond 3k it sounds amazing.

I'm sure a car with OE manifold and section 1, the RPIs will be great. (haven't experienced it myself)

I'd go with inTgr8r's advise 100%. He's one smart dude that knows these cars better than anyone else.
Enjoy

Yeah, based on his recommendation, I have bought a set myself. I have the Eisenman Sports currently, and while they sound GREAT when getting on it, the are very tame under normal driving conditions. I like them a lot, but want to try something more annoying, er aggressive i mean.. :-)

these are the ones I got - $945 delivered. Give a call, they have a shipment coming in next week...

I hate to be that guy but was there a thread that you did this with or a good DIY you'd recommend? I'm just curious what spots were the biggest culprits.

I've found a guide to disassemble the trunk, just not sure what I'm going to find will make the greatest improvements.

I don't have an issue with it, but I could very easily see where there could be one. I have a RE X Pipe with the RPI's and it's seriously the best sounding rasp I could have ever hoped for.

Thanks for everyone's responses! Very helpful. A friend has an M5 with sweet sounding pipes, but he has a switch in the car that will make the pipes more tame while on long trips, but if he wants to have some fun he can. Is there something like this you guys could recommend?

Yeah - will probably be about 2 weeks before I even get the RPI's, then a week or two after to get installed. I'm hoping to get some video of the sound and a mini "Exhaust Fest" comparison with my SPL meter. We'll see if I can live with the RPI or not :-)

Interested to see the results from your testing.

I've always been thinking of dumping the El Diablo exhaust for something louder since this isn't my primary anymore

For sure! I'll plan on doing a post with the details. Of course, anyone that wants to hear the Eisenman's before the swap is welcome to...

I removed the side carpeting compartments, floor and cabin wall. There isn't much place to put material against the cabin wall but everywhere else I put a thick layer or roxul insulation sound deadening. This is typically used in residential build for washroom walls, home theatre's and simular loud spaces.

Awesome, those locations are what I assumed would bring the best results. I was also curious to see if you messed with your doors or ceiling liner. Again this would be the nail in the coffin for something like this but with what it entails I wouldn't think it would be worth it.

Thanks again for the advice!

You would be the first I have heard say the RE Diablo's are not loud.

I was thinking about getting them. I think they look better than the RPI as I don't like the different size tips.

Lol...I guess they are loud but I don't mind it. They do make my E82 with a muffler delete sound like an OE exhaust.

I do hate the tips on the RPi. I think that's one of the main reasons why I avoided them to begin with.

Your car rattled with rpi? Very strange because my car doesn't have a single rattle. Tips look much better in person in my opinion. I didn't think I would like them either but they really grew on me and I get a lot of compliments as well.

I love the tips, but mine rattles too around 2k - 3k rpm under load. I have the dkf hangers. May give them a try next spring for vibration isolation.

I dont understand the sound deadening. If you dont want to hear it, what makes you think everyone else does.
