Brain fart bleeding the brakes

Yep, you guessed it. Didn’t keep the reservoir filled.

I got side tracked before doing the last wheel and thought I had filled up the reservoir. Filling my last cup with a hand vac pump and I hear the gurgling sound. Topped it off and sucked out a second cup of fluid out of the caliper but no good. Now the brakes are like mush. I believe I sucked air into the ABS unit.

Been doing brakes forever but never did this before. Can I fix this at home or is it time for the dealer?

Oops!

On an E36 you can manually control the ABS pump by pulling the ASC (or DSC?) relay and shorting the contacts. This would allow you to cycle fluid through and purge the air. I'm not sure if there's an equivalent method for the Z4 or not. If not, the dealer is the safe bet. They'll use their scan tool to cycle the ABS pump.

Could you possibly activate the ABS and cycle it by doing panic stops?

Good idea. Panic stops (or even regular stops) in grass for the full ABS effect.

Any independent mechanic with access to a GT1 machine can hook it up and get the ABS pump to manually cycle.
