How to: Remove clutch switch?

I found where the clutch switch is and I was wondering before I take it out, is there any way to make sure the clutch switch is broken before taking it out or even after to save myself from buying a new one incase that isn't the problem. Also is there any thing I need to keep in mind when taking removing the clutch switch, any precautionary steps??

You should be able to test w/o removing the switch

How can I test it? I just removed it but it only takes 2 seconds to clip it back in

Incase any body was wondering how to remove the clutch switch, just take a look at the phots below. Just remove the molding below the steering wheel and unclip the switch and have a small tool perhaps a pen to unhook the clutch switch from the wiring.

You can test it with a multimeter set to continuity, and see if pressing the switch toggles the beep.

I don't see where on the switch I should be touching the leads.. I don't know if my switch is the same as yours but this is what my switch looks like,

I don't see either, I had assumed it was like an e36 clutch switch.

Did you unplug it from any electrical wiring? I'd start there.

After some very light research, it appears that BMW uses a magnetic switch on these cars. They're detecting initial clutch pedal movement (to disengage cruise control) and full clutch depression (to enable the start circuit) all with the same switch.

It has 4 wires/4 prongs however, I have not been able to find any info on which colored wire/numbered prong does what..

Sounds like it is time for a new switch. What finally happened? did you replace it and all is well?
