Picked up a new car wednesday...
Haven't had a chance to take decent pictures, due to the nearly constant rain here in So. Cal.
The Turbocharged AWD experience was nice. Family finances dictate that we find something more along the line of true econobox, and I was not willing to give up on the MZ4 Coupe. 200HP, 2,800lbs...With some good tires this thing will probably still run circles around the majority of BMW's fleet despite the torsion beam rear end on tighter tracks. The little one approves.

Very nice... especially considering the coupe gets to stay.
AWD? ....pretty sure we only FWD models up here. there are definitely some interesting (fun) econo platforms out there these days. The Subi BRZ would definitely get a look from me for a fun DD.

Dumb question - what is it? I can't make out the brand on my monitor.

Thanks!
Congrats on the new car and the coup in keeping the Coupe!! That rear window set up on the Veloster looks very neat!

I mean AWD as in the Subaru WRX that was traded in for this was a nice experiment.

Nice. Good to see that some car companies still value lightness.
I see you went with the turbo version. DCT or 6MT? From the specs, looks like you get the full 195 ft lbs of torque from pretty low RPM (1,750). Don't know about the WRX, but the STI we had at one time (and swapped out for a Golf TDI) didn't have anything below 3K RPM. Great above that though, but I actually prefer the low-end torque for traffic or around town (TDI has a ton of low end torque). Ian, I think The Hack is referring to the WRX (AWD) he swapped out for the Veloster (FWD). Last edited by Finnegan; 11-30-2012 at 02:52 PM.. |

The single turbo on the Subaru doesn't kick in until roughly around 3,000 RPM too, and when it does...Watch the heck out. The Veloster has a similar twin-scroll turbo design that BMW uses, and there's very little lag. You still feel it progressively building though. I suspect, however, that they found a way to disable the turbo in 1st gear, since there appears to be a sensor that tells which manual gear it's in. It's weird, it doesn't feel like there's boost in 1st, and I can sort of feel the subtle difference in 2nd and on. Like 1st gear doesn't pull hard enough or something.

I know what you mean ^, i have the turbo Forester & it's the same. It can catch you off guard at times when motoring through a corner. ....especially if it kicks in pre-apex

question, a friend is in the market to pick one up. Looking at 13 with Technology and style packs. Best price he got was 24k out the door for an auto. Is that in line with what you paid?

Hack, I wouldn't be surprised if the ECU has some kind of torque management/boost control for lower gears. If it does, I'm sure some enterprising tuners and enthusiasts have (or will soon have) figured out a way to dispense with that.
I know what you two mean about after 3K with the Scoob. When the boost would kick in, then bam corners could become "interesting" quite quickly. (A nice even application of throttle that doesn't upset the car is always appreciated by the traction gods.) With a tune, the turbo kicked in a bit sooner and with more ramp, which was very nice, and with more final fury as well. There was an easy 13% HP 17% torque gain, and more drive-ability. I picked up a Cobb tuner secondhand for under 300 (sold it back for same amount). |

Mine's a turbo. Pricing on the Turbo and the NA Velosters are not comparable because the Turbo comes with a ton of standard options, like heated seats, foglight, projector headlights, aerodynamic skirt, 18" wheels, comfort access, leather seats...well, you get the idea. Can't tell you what is a fair price or not on the NA Veloster.

CONGRATS!
I was giving the Veloster a hard look and was waiting all year for the turbo model to be released... but I found out the turbo version doesn't come with an upgraded suspension/brakes over the base model? But I do love the look and the mileage makes it awesome for daily driving. |

From what I've READ, the veloster is a crappy driver's car with bad steering feel and overall enjoyment is low. Is that better seank?

The truth is the majority of people who write reviews for magazines and websites don't know how to drive. I've witnessed this on multiple occasions. The VAST majority of your every day automotive journalist would make it onto out "D for Life" list at our local BMWCCA HPDEs. Is the Veloster a great handling platform? No. FWD and an economical torsion beam pivot in the rear means it's got some serious limitations. If this is a 2,800 lbs car with 200 HP and LSD? This would be a freakishly good and fun car to drive, comparable to the great Porsche Cayman in dynamics. But then it would have been a Toyobaru. But 2,800lbs and 200 HP on a FWD platform with open diff is still nothing to laugh at. An instructor friend and myself took a Veloster Turbo (not mine) up through Angeles Crest Highway, and honestly? In capable hands, the chassis is more than capable. And it WILL give most current bloated BMW platforms a run for its money. Now, I'm not going to lie and say it's better than say, the MINI Cooper S. It's not. The MCS is still one of the best FWD on the market today. But for an ECONOBOX? It is pretty damn good, especially if you factor in all the features packed in the standard package.

Not with 200 HP, no. Surprisingly, the Tucson we own also do not exhibit any torque steer. I think they did something with the electronically boosted steering by artificially stiffening up the steering at low-speed/high-torque to minimize the effect. Or they balanced out the uneven drive-shaft (last time I had another FWD Mobis/Hyundai/Kia on a lift, it's apparent that they DO balance the driveshaft).
Of course, I haven't "floored" it yet, although we did drive the blue Veloster Turbo Automatic that Hyundai lent us for a week pretty hard (on Angeles Crest Highway) and I did not notice any significant torque steer.

I will be interested to hear how you like it after a year or so. Everything I have read says Hyundai has the quality part taken care of, but still has a way to go dynamically. The Genesis Coupe looks great and on paper (like a 370z competitor) but all the reviews say it isn't. I wonder what kind of aftermarket support the Veloster will get(if any)?
