Different front and rear or same all around?

I recently bought my 2004 Z4. The tires looked like they had plenty of tread life left in them. 2 months later I pull the rear off to install the car alarm siren and see the inside edge is worn to the belt and starting to de-laminate. So now I am looking at tires and see that I am supposed to have 225/40ZR18 up front and 255/35ZR18 in the rear. What I have is 255/35 front and rear.

I assume the PO did this so he could rotate the tires normally instead of just swapping sides? Are there any negative handling aspects involved with running the tires this way instead of the different sizes?
