driving with no oil cap on engine
bad, or REALLY bad? Like if I cover it with something (duct tape) so no debris falls in while I wait for a new one to come in the mail... is that OK?

Careful. I heard a story about some dude who put a sock to plug up the hole and it got sucked in somehow.

Uhm, there's variances in air pressure when the engine is running, air will get pushed in and sucked out...
Driving without an oil cap is asking for trouble.

you're gonna laugh. I bought some oil at walmart, and wanted to fill up at the parking lot. took off the cap, and realised I'd rather do it home with a funnel to keep things clean. Came home to realise that I forgot to put the cap back on hahahahahh

In addendum to that, if anything were to fall in, you could wreck the head and you'd need a new motor.
Don't drive it. Cover it while you wait for the new one, but above all, don't drive it.

Why not just grab one from your dealership? It'd be the fastest way to get a replacement...
And I mean.. walk in.. look at the demo cars... pop the hood... get a little handsy... TADA!! No really.. go buy one?

Oil cap design on BMW engines hasn't changed for over 20 years. At least not until the last generation NXX engines, but even then, they're just FANCY caps that's attached to a swivel so you can't lose them.
