The oem M Differential is a plate-type LSD, which functions on "plates" and has a pre-determined amount of lock (around 30% on the old M's, which is rather pathetic. I believe the new Variable M's are better though, and varies the torque rather than being pre-determined).
Our Helical LSD functions on "gears", thus does not lock. Instead, it constantly biases the torque between the left/right wheels, transferring upto 75% of the power to the wheel with the most traction. In comparison, an open diff (i.e stock) transfers all the power to the wheel with the least traction. The advantages of a Helical vs Plate are: - Zero maintenance required. They will last you a lifetime, without needing to worry about changing Plates or Springs - Can withstand a virtually unlimited amount of power and abuse without exploding (we have tested our LSD's to over 1700whp!). With a Plate LSD, if it's not the ears on the plates breaking off, it's the spider gears exploding - Are far more "daily-driver" friendly, with none of the NVH commonly associated with Plate type LSD's The benefits of a Plate type LSD? If you have a serious track car (and not a daily driver), then the performance of a "real" Plate type LSD (i.e one that can be adjusted upto full 100% lock, not a $3k oem paperweight) will outperform a Helical type during hard cornering. In summary? if you car is a daily driver, you will not experience any benefit to the Plate type LSD over a Helical LSD.
