I am reviving an old thread here.
Speaking of high mileage, I recently bought a 3.0si coupe with 123k miles and about to do my first oil change. Should I stick with the factory recomemded 5w30 mobile1 or maybe go with the 10w40 since it's a high mileage?

I'd stick with the 5w30 Mobil1 or Castrol. You say you bought it recently, how recently? I would have done the oil change in the first week of ownership unless you had rock-solid proof of it being done at the last required interval of 5000 miles (not 15000 as per dealer advice). I personally never take the chance and always do an oil change as soon as I get a new car home.

Ok, I wasn't sure if the factory oil recomendation will hold for higher mileage. The car is about a month old. I have the oil change record at 119k now it's 123xxx miles.

id recon ive got one of the higher M-coupes on here, just passed 202K kms.. they are great cars, but i disagree with most on what to look for when buying higher mile cars.. for me, Condition is everything.. yeah its nice if they have a service record, but a lot of cars /with/ service records have issues, esp if its very low milage and been sitting still for a long time respectively. obviously, when buying, you need to consider price and which items you will replace anyways.. if its 50K or 100K, chances are pretty darn high, a lot of the bushes will be shot, as with the suspension. once again, condition for me is most important, and even better if the PO has been an enthusiast. you can pretty much keep your garage queens with 12K on the clock in 8 years as probably most rubber parts will be sheit. t any rate, as most of the guys have said, yeah it need maintenance, but pretty close to what my other cars have cost.

BMW used to make motors that could make it to 200K mi without a rebuild. The electrics are another story... I haven't seen any high mileage woes coming from E46 M3 owners (these guys will probably know more than us before our cars get as old since they have been out since 2001 with the S54). BMW's were meant to be driven. They're not so rare that they will actually increase in value (unless you have an E30 M3 or 2002tii ... and are willing to stick with the car for 20-30 years)
