Most people that have that problem go with the concealed display its about 1/2 the size of the V1 face and can be easily hidden in the dash, ashtray, etc.

Sorry I missed that. You want to use the rear view wiring harness. It will be towards the back of the dome light housing. It's prewired for a universal garage door opener even if you dont have one which is why it has a power wire in it. To get to it you can take a flat head and open up the base of the mirror assembly (clam shell I think is what people call it) inside you'll find the plug and the wiring harness. I remember not being able to unplug it so I just reached into the opening, located my wire (probably wrapped) and spliced it without unplugging the wiring harness. Let me know if this helps.

Ya thats what I ended up using cause unplugging it wasn't possible for me, I'm sure it's doable though. Also have a list of wires handy when you do it because your carry might vary slightly. Or if you have a voltmeter that would be your best bet to test which wires get power when the key is on slot 2 and dont when its not.

I am pretty sure this is the way I am going to go if the answers are right.
I never heard of them being illegal in IA, only DC and VA. Any body else weight in on this one?

You don't need to.

BMW wires are COLOR CODED. Lavender wires are live with 12V power at switch position 1. The strip color determines the amount it is fused. The minimum fuse is 5AMP. No strip means un-fused power (danger! Do not tap!). Green wires are live with 12V Power at switch position 2. There are a couple of other color wires I have yet to figure out what the color stands for, but they all supply power in a specific fashion. For example, the wire that I tapped for the UGDO installation (see thread here: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...highlight=UGDO) supplies DIMMED power (meaning it dims with the headlight dial, same as the stereo on the dash) is grey with red stripe. I haven't dug in the back of the stereo to see if the grey wires are indeed dimmed power when headlight is switched on.

I've dug into the E9X overhead console and the color scheme is identical. Lavender = switched 12V at 1, green is switched power at 2.

I have V1, but I don't have the hardwire kit, which kit on the V1 website is the one I need for a hardwire? Or could I just go to Radioshack?

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, radar detectors are banned in all vehicles in the state of Virginia and the District of Columbia, Washington D.C. Radar Detectors are also banned in big trucks in the states of New York and Illinois. Plus, under federal law, the use of radar or laser speed detectors is illegal in all commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds. However, radar detectors are allowed in all noncommercial vehicles in all other states.

so i finally ordered my V1 and received it today. i am soconfused as to even how to take down the dome light. ughhhhh...this sucks. i just want my V1 in the car! it doesn't even work in the ashtray power supply.

Once I get the dome light fixture down i am pretty sure I can figure it out.

You just use a small flat head screw driver wrapped in a towel and pry it out from the front towards the back, or maybe back towards the front one of them has hinges one has springs.

I could have sworn they were illegal in Iowa as well...

you just stick the knife covered in a cloth in between it and just kind of wiggle it out?
