I suspect that you are correct. BMW had a specific sound in mind and decided that this was the best way to achieve it. I still haven't tried it with out the foam as I'm fine with as it is so far.

Drove it, and honestly preferred the sound of the Stebro exhaust and was not enamored with the extra "woosh" of the air...too muscle car-ish for me. So went back and put foam back in and now am actually happier with quiet motor, and deep exhaust.

I think they added the sound generator, rather than take away sound deadening to avoid the Mustang, Camero thin metal and door sounds. The Bimmer and others are bit more quieted from road noise, and thats kind of nice...any less materials and car would be a bit "thin" sounding [mixed metaphor but you get the point].

The 'big' engines got the sound generator, the M54 3.0i and the N52 3.0si

sorry guys may b, i had a dump question but.

i do own my 2.5i 2004, and it don't come with this sound generator so, I bought it from item 1-7 as mention in early posted.

At one end of the pipe (item 7) I could understand to remove item 8 first and the attach the pipe to that hole. But and another end which should attach to the intake, but i can't see how to attach the item1 (Sound generator) to any hole???? Do u guys has any picture to describe how to install?

Thanks a lot

so the point of this was just to try and get a specific sound out of the engine while in the cabin?

Yes it was, and I remember that there was even an option when I bought it that you could choose to remove some of the sound insulation.
I took it back then, but I don't know if it included the sound generator.
I'm gonna check it out tonight

I personally like this mod a lot but I admit I'm not a fan during the colder months when the car hasn't fully warmed up. The sound coming in is very raw and mechanical, and doesn't sound refined till it's fully warmed up (takes away from what a BMW should sound like). But during those other 8 months of the year, the car sounds beautiful.

Its funny how initially I said "the M doesn't need it"

and yet I'm wondering how amazing the supercharged S54 would sound with a retrofitted sound generator...

Is it possible to fit it to the S54?

I'm guessing it would sound loud and awesome. Take the sound now and imagine it directed into the cabin.

If someone here has one they don't want, I'd like to try it. Obviously it wouldn't plug directly into my intake, but it just needs to be routed near the intake

I bought the parts for my first Z. A 2.5 liter. Sounded awesome. Helped me sell the car I believe also. Had that extra little sound.

AirOpsMgr is hooking me up with a kit, minus the tube. I should have it running pretty soon once it arrives. Can't wait

Taking the foam out was too loud for me, so I left the first foam in place but installed only a quarter of the 2nd foam (next to the firewall). It sounds amazing.

I recently received it, but haven't had time to install it. I'll most likely need an oem pipe that goes from the firewall since it'll give me the best airtight connection
