3.91 ring & pinion gear set.

Hi guys,

I'm new here and would like to seek your expertise.

Does anyone know if 3.91 ring & pinion gear set from turner (http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...CT_ID=E46M3-RP) is plug and play into the Z4M rear diff?

Thanks in advance.

Since it's for the E46 M3, yes it is plug & play. E46 M3 and E85/E86 Z4M have the exact same differentials. I'm about to have my REM-polished ring & pinion installed next week, along with my AutoSolutions SSK

I was able to get a reputable BMW race shop to do the gut transaction for $930 labor-only.
A different gear shop quoted me $760, but the extra couple hundred spent @ a legit shop gives me huuuge peace of mind.

Does it fit? Yes.
Is it plug & Play? IMO, NO.

As mfanatic325 says, get a reputable shop to do the internals for you.
If you do your own wrenching, you can do the pumpkin re & re yourself.

What's the name of the shop you went to (and what city)? I'm thinking about doing a 4.10 swap.

You may want to check out dan@ diffsonline. Most of the time they have differentials already built and charge a core till you send yours back.

The shop I went to is called Performance Technic in Pleasanton, California. If you go, ask for Joe.

If your car is relatively low-mileage, I would recommend that you get your own differential rebuilt, as opposed to swapping in an already-built diff. Because you never know what kind of mileage those swaps had on them before they were built. Whereas you know how many miles your very own car's diff has on it.
So unless the shop you're trading diffs with is willing to cover that built diff for more than a year in terms of workmanship/warranty, then I would just get your own personal diff rebuilt instead of swapping.

What was the cost out the door? $930 plus a rebuild kit and r&p starts to get pricey.

I got my REM-polished ring & pinion for $500 shipped (very good deal). Then the total labor for the differential rebuild, including shim kit and a fluid flush, was $950 cash out the door (good deal as well).

That's exactly how I feel, and why I'd prefer to have someone rebuild my existing diff.

Thanks for the Shop recommendation!

Who did you buy your R&P from? Is it the BMW OEM R&P or aftermarket?

Did the $950 include the labor to remove/re-install the Diff from the car or did you do that first and just bring the Diff to the shop to do the R&P swap?

I bought it off the forum FS section. It was a Timken REM-poished 3.91 ring & pinion. Not a BMW Motorsports ring & pinion.

The $950 was all-inclusive. I'm going in on Wednesday for my 1200-mile service. I'll be slightly over 1200 by then but that's okay

Excellent, thanks!

Great news about reaching 1200 miles, now you can really let it rip!

Whats the difference (if any) between the Timken and the BMW OEM one?

I feel ashamed, but I've already started kind of thompin' on the throttle/diff lolll
I feel like it's been a really good break-in thus far regardless though

Probably just different type of material and/or manufacturing processes used. Then of course, the different branding and probably pricing as well. In the end, as long as it fits well and is equivalent to or exceeds REM-polish, you're good as gold

What does the 1200 mile service entail? Fluid flush/inspection?

Sorry for all the cost-related questions. I'm just trying to budget an out-the-door price after shim kit, labor, r&p, services, etc... looks like we're at $950 + (r&p) + (1200 mile service)

haha no problem.
$950 cash out the door for removing the differential AND rebuilding it with my supplied 3.91 ring & pinion; with shim kit included in the price (which the shop sourced from DINAN). The first fill-up of Differential fluid is included in this price as well.

Then I'm paying for the 1200-mile service, where they're nice enough to throw in the labor free of cost, but I must pay for the diff fluid myself of course, which is $100+.

what kind of diff fluid is $100+? is it oem stuff?

i was able to get away with 2 bottles of redline 75w90ns (no friction modifiers) in my quaife, for $25 shipped via amazon.com... the cost of owning a /m i guess? haha... speaking of which i think redline now offers engine oil in the 10w60

haha yeah, the OEM stuff. The race shop manager said he's tried all kinds, and found that OEM is still the best in terms of diff fluid. The other stuff he's tried had some grinding and such, so he always recommends OE fluid now.

As for motor oil, I figure yeah, gotta pay to play lol. Better safe than sorry. It's all probably the same anyhow, but I'm not down to take any risks on these expensive-to-replace items (such as motor, transmission, differential, etc. etc.).

mfanatic,

Looking forward to your review of the 3.91. I've been thinking about doing this in my "long term," plan. Any chance you are willing to give a ride when you have her good and broken in so I can feel the pull?

Sure, you can even take the car for a spin if you want. I'll call up my local Z4M buddy in San Jose and we can meet up around Great Mall or something in Milpitas.
I did short review here:
