So the magnet removes them, what do you place them with? I think I'll change my plugs AND my coils when I adjust my valves at 50K miles (probably next summer). Just seems a good, not terribly expensive proactive thing to do. Thoughts?

no point in doing the coils, they last forever. and they're not cheap. plugs are definitely worth doing, i think thats on the bmw schedule.

the magnet places the shim as well.

its a really easy job, its tough to show really well with the pics in the writeups, but as soon as you get the lid off and get into it those questions become really obvious.

i had some of the same worries, but it turned out that they weren't explicitly covered in the writeups because it becomes so obvious once you get into it.

The shims sit in a cup on the top of the valve spring retainer.
Stick the shim on the magnet, set it in the cup, and then slide the magnet off.
Watch out they don't' "tidily-wink".
Use your finger or a non-magnetic poker to hold it down as you remove the magnet.
I saw a YouTube video where he put grease on the shim to stick it in place, but a layer of grease may throw off the measurement.
If you can't get exactly the gap you want, err toward having the gap too big.
May tick a little, but you'll be assured the valve fully closes. Important that it does.

My indy told me to wait until I hear the valves ticking before getting them adjusted. Are there real risks to doing that or should I be getting the adjustment done proactively dead on the 30,000 mile mark? Also any idea what this job would cost at the stealership?

You're assuming that the gaps will get bigger. That's fine if they do.
There's debate as to whether the gaps get bigger or smaller with time.
Depends on if the rocker arms wear faster than the valve seats.
If the gaps get too small it won't tick, it will just go boom because the valves aren't fully seating and can't cool.

I've been meaning to post the results of my valve adjustments over the years.
I don't have much going on today. Think I'll put my results in a new thread.

that's terrible advice, sounds like its time for you to find a new indy.

the point of the service isn't just to make your engine quieter, there's a bunch of other stuff you should check at the same time.

most indy shops will charge between $500-$700 for a valve adjustment including the new seals, gaskets, etc. I've seen dealers quote anywhere from $1700 to $2500 for the same job.

I just completed my adjustment using jdoublehcubed kit. Everything went smooth. I have low to moderate experience with car maintenance and it went fine for me. Just prepare ahead and take your time. Once you do the first valve than the rest is just repetition. Rent this kit with confidence. jdoublehcubed got the kit to me quickly and was understanding on some schedule changes I had. I'll definitely be renting this kit again the next time i do an adjustment.

Bumping up for a great forum member.

Rented the kit to do my recent adjustment, jdoublehcubed was super easy to deal with and made the process complete cake.
