but right now, she's sitting pretty, safe and sound, running smooth as ever.... just got alittle hitch to deal with. people are dining out their, i have a problem with my sports car... its not the end of the world.

Used to see that on air cooled VW engines, but mainly on the exhaust side. It was typically valve stem stretch due to the extreme heat. Hard to believe you'd see that in the intake side of a water cooled engine, so that leaves valve seat wear as the possible suspect? The only other thing I can think of is some small debris has gotten trapped under the shim.........

Also curious that it's only one valve.
If it was due to valve seat regression, you would think that there would be more than one. Was this particular shim replaced previously? (Possibly incorrectly) ...sorry just remembered that there was no report from Simpson. Still, a possibility

hi ian, all updates are in the link thread, as its got more hit over that side I've been spending most time their... :-)
i agree with your direction however... I'm pretty certain that replacing the shim with a smaller one will see this fall back in line with the others, I'm going to replace it MYSELF, as i feel i need to learn alittle more about this process! i will be checking myself yearly from now on.

I downloaded from Internet the two files attached. Rename "S-54 Valve Adjustment Schedule" extension to xlsx to track the history in spreadsheet. I print out the pdf and write down the values and transfer it over to spreadsheet. Just add a sheet each time to record the shims replaced and have an idea the current values for next adjustment.
