belt tensioners
can you adjust them? if so, what is the easiest way?

They are not adjustable but they are relatively easy to replace on the M54 engine, once you get clearance at the front of the engine.

don't think the belts are the source of my problems now
maybe the fuel pump? could that be making a high pitched whine during idle after startup?

If your belts have never been changed, it is very possible that they are getting hard and will slip until they get warmed up. Belts are very cheap and if you can do it yourself, it is very cheap to throw one on. Do both the WP/Alt belt as well as the A/C belt while you have the clearance available.
