RPI skid plate Group Buy

BIMMERPOST / Classifieds
Asking Price:
None

Location:
✓ Will Ship

Item Interest
I've been in talks with Ben at RPI about starting a new run of skid plates .I've had a few people interested also. He's putting together pricing right now and will be in touch with me with details.

From RPi - "RPi skid plates for your Z4 M coupe help protect your front bumper from unfriendly driveways and speed bumps. Powder coated and made from high quality aluminum, the skid plates install in minutes and require no cutting, drilling or modification to install."
Sounds like 5 orders will get it going.

**UPDATE** Price will be $68 shipped in the U.S. Through the month of March

reatil on these is $88 shipped.

I have no interest in this either way but it seems these would be easy to produce if there were a pattern for the part.
Laser/plasma or water jet cut and powder coating would likely be less than $100.
What is RPI likely to charge for these?

Ya, i can make something like this for 10$. But what you pay for is the R&D. RPI spent the time (presumably) to create the patterns so that they fit perfectly, which is painstaking.

Not much R&D to be honest. It's a flat plate with a couple of holes that could be easily patterned on a piece of Bristol board. Just my 2c

Sad to see people flaming a high quality consumer retail product's cost, with marketing and mass production costs and inventory and warehousing, vs what a home hack could make a lower quality cheap knockoff for.
What about the cost of the waterjet? or machine time or the t&m + reasonable cost of labor for the machine shop... If a product can't be sold to an individual consumer for 4x what it costs to make in quantities, a company will not stay in business.

I believe when I bought mine RPI was only charging like $60 or $70 a set, so I don't know where the pre-emptive cost complaints are coming from.

You're not going to be able to have a shop this water jet, debur, and paint these for less than $60 unless you buy 15 or 20 sets or own the water jet youself, so I'd say RPI is pretty reasonable in charging something in the ballpark of $75 a set.

If they are under $100 I'm in too. Just need to be sure they will fit an 03 non m roadster.
