My "new" 2006 Z4MR

46,700 miles with aluminum trim, extended leather and nav. Work since I acquired (about a month ago) includes replacement belly pan, new windshield cowl, replacement M stickers, one PDR ding removed from hood, and full detail/Chemical guys paint correction.

LOVING THIS CAR, and have already spent a ton of time reading up on things in this forum!

First road trip will be to Tail of the Dragon in mid-July.

She looks gorgeous!

You can't go wrong with the Dragon. When I picked up my car up from the Performance Center I headed straight to the the Dragon. Such an amazing road.

Roadtripper App

Seems to be a legit backroads trip planning application. Using it to get from RVA to the Dragon. Will post photos, etc. of the adventure!

Nice looking UOA. Seems like the 0w-40 is an excellent choice for these engines that don't see much track duty.

Nice Z. Which oil to use has been absolutely beaten to death. 10-60 or 15-50 if you are tracking the car. Some of us on here have learned the hard way. Personally, the first two things I would recommend is the exhaust hub and rod bearings. If the previous owner was running 0-40, then I would be suspect of the bearings and there is no way they did the hub if they were running 0-40.

If you are around Northern VA, come by and say hello.

@Ryan - vanos overhaul is on my list for this fall. I was initially viewing the UOA with lead at 1 as a good sign re:rod bearings, but you have me thinking with your oil weight comment. Would you suspect that the lead coating has worn off at this mileage (49k) which is why the lead level is so low?

Where in NoVA are you? I am in McLean about twice a month for work...

Low lead is good...if there were were no outer layer left, the other metals would have spiked as well. Just remember, the bearing shells are a maintenance item on these cars.

Run the correct oil, let it really warm up, and don’t bog the engine. Personally, I would probably change them out on a car I didn’t know the history. There are a couple shops in the area...RRT in NOVA, Bimmerwerks in SilverSping, and TIER Car Care in Pikesville, MD...only people who touch my cars.

I’m in Leesburg, work in Tysons. Love to see your car and say hi. I’m usually at a track somewhere on the weekend, but Summit is my home track.

Took the plunge last weekend, and wrenched on the Z seriously for the first time (only other thing I have done till now was replace the alternator)...

All preventative maintenance items done included Beisan oil disk, Beisan vanos seals, Beisan upper chain guide, upgraded cam bolts, shimmed the valves while I was in there (3 were out of spec) and replaced the plugs.

Took me about 10 hours to do all of it, but wow... does she ever drive smoother and quicker after the work!

Just turned 54k miles right before I did all of this, so very close to time for oil change #2 and probably another road trip to the dragon once spring finally arrives!

And I have to say thanks to @bignosejim - https://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1112938

Thanks! They are OEM BMW euro spec 2013 M3 style 260m wheels. I wanted to keep it OEM, lighter, wider and better offset without doing the tired but still sexy style 359 CSL wheels. Any wheel from the e9x generation(v8) M3 will fit nice on the Z4M. I have a ton of other work done to mine. To much to list here. Maybe we can meet up in McLean sometime and discuss in the spring? Would love to hit the dragon as well! 😁

All on my to do list, along with rod bearings and motor mounts (I'm at 91k miles). Due to other priorities at the moment, the car has sat in the garage under covers for a year now. I miss the driving the car so much.

How'd you find the job? Pretty straight forward?

I'm surprised not more people run this setup, it looks so good. The concavity makes it such a big upgrade to the stock wheels. Btw, that ride height is spot on!

I don't think the 260M would look as good on my AW, it wouldn't pop like it does your car haha. The 219M would be nice though!

The job was fairly straightforward. Watch the fatboys garage video series on S54 vanos repair, read the beisan manual, the ECStuning S54 vanos seal installation .pdf, and finally the thread I linked to earlier about Z4M specific install tips.

Good luck!

Manual transmission flush today, with ~1.5L of RP Synchromax. Uneventful change (now that I have the quickjack 5000s, this is enabling a whole lot of maintenance that I would otherwise be sending to an indie), except that the dimple drain plug that I ordered from ECS was the wrong size. They sent me an M24x1.5 instead of the M18x1.5 that the tranny takes.

Sent them an email, and I'm sure they will take a return... but I don't want to do the job again at this point.

Shifts feel a bit smoother, and the factory fluid was DARK as it drained out. Shifter moves easier from side to side when in neutral than before.

Overall, I don't see what the fuss is all about. Check another maintenance item off of the list, though.

Still loving this car!!

Update: Got RMA approval email from ECSTuning today, and separate email that they will update their catalog.
