Why even bother with the nav in Z4M?

While the NAV isn't nearly as good as a $200 Garmin, I still think it's essential in these cars. Damn near all of the cars electronics run through there and it provides a good interface. It's very nice to be able to see the BT phonebook, adjust audio settings, mp3/song info, etc.... The large display screen really helps. Plus, it looks great at night with the top down and I've received several compliments from other drivers

I'd get a map update if I were you. Our subdivision was built within the last 3 years and everything is spot on accurate.

It's a completely different system and never going to be as nice as the iDrive navigation. But if you live/drive in a more recently developed area then a map update wouldn't hurt.

Z4M Nav I thought just directs you to the windiest roads around?

Sounds like time for an update alright.

In terms of functionality, it's just different than Idrive and now that I'm used to it I find it easy to use. And it works just fine in my area, but there haven't been changes here in years. It seems to give me verbal warning well in advance of when I need to turn (like a couple of blocks ahead). My 09 M3 seems to like to wait until I'm right on the turn to warn me--which means scrambling or missing a turn.

Neither BMW nav systems are as good as the cheap Garmin we bought last Summer for our beater car.

Yea my nav isn't too bad but they're starting to change the roads up some here so I'll upgrade maps sometime.

Nothing beats my droid with google maps navigation though. Always up to date and is accurate as hell.

Little off topic, but the one of the things I've found I don't like about it is that I don't know how to view the upcoming turns one after another.

On my garmin I could scroll through all the turns it's going to tell me to take, and decide if I liked the route it was tell me to go or not. This one, I'm not sure if that's possible. I usually keep it on split screen, so map on left, turn/distance-to-turn on right. Anybody?

The only significant advantage the navi confers is the interface for the phone book. Without it, the bluetooth is a huge PITA to use. Not having owned a car with navigation in the past, this one doesn't bother me too much. I haven't figured out how to look up POI stuff like gas stations, restaurants, etc. May need a firmware update? I think I have v28.

One of my initial post after getting the ZM4C was how bad the factory NAV was. I remembered saying that it was worse than my wife $150 Garmin.
Oh well, everything else about the car sure made up for the lame NAV system and cup holders.

Advice...if you truly need a GPS, get that $150+ Garmin and be done with it.
Otherwise, just enjoy it as a true sport car.

I use my iPhone to navigate. I like having the map on the screen while driving as a point of reference. Nice to be able to glance at it and quickly know which way is north. Also "looks" good having the map up.

While searching for a car, I didn't care if it had nav or not. I like the ability to tune the equalizer and bluetooth phonebook, even tho my phone book is HUGE. The potential ability to hack into the signal is always nice incase I desire to in the future.

You can get the NAV to give you a list of the directions it's going to take along the route, but it will replace the map on the display. After you get it to start guidance, you go to the information menu and there will be an entry for "route list" or something like that. That is the turn by turn list of where it's taking you with distances, etc. It will remove the last instruction when you pass it and count down the distance to the next instruction.

Overall I'm happy with the NAV. No, it's not the newest or fanciest on the market, but it seldom leads me astray. I have started doing a few things to it to make it a little more personal, like replace the blue arrow with a little silver Z4M Coupe.

It's better then trying to use my blackberry, and I don't have to fuck with the iDrive knob to use it. It's a map that's always there, is a good interface for the radio and other car stuffs, no ugly, cumbersome, line of sight blocking, suction cup mount. Amazing? No. Adequate? Yes. And even if you have the nav, there's nothing to stop you from using a Garmin.

If I were to buy the car new, I'd have questioned the usefulness of it compared to cost, but since any Z4 you get now is used, the cost of the nav is hardly a factor. The only reason I see to look for a car without it is if you absolutely fucking hate it, or you want to gut the car for track use.

I think whether or not you like the navigation in the Z4M is a combination of personal taste and geographical changes in your area. I like how user friendly and simple the nav in the Z4M is to use when I'm driving alone. Neither is as easy to use or as cool as the Garmin, but honestly, who cares - the car is awesome.

I agree that the Nav is not stellar. Its not even close to a simple $200 that can be purchased today.

However, if you learn to use it, it really does work. Get the new 2010 update discs. Force yourself to use it for a few short trips, and you'll find that it gets you from point A to B reliably. And you don't have to window mount anything

I rarely use the nav, but haven't had any problems on the few drives I have. My biggest complaint is the colors used (when you're in the middle of nowhere, a white road on tan background is near impossible to see).

I basically got it so I can display my iPod info and eventually add TV&Nav2Go.

You can mod the nav colors, some people over at Xoutpost even changed the second color set to a night mode.

Agreed. That's the only reason why I'd opt for one. The archaic display and added weight is otherwise worthless.
