Question for those with soft tops...

Hello! So I just got my car back from the dealership for service (had the grinding starter issue along with a faulty rain sensor), and I was talking to my service adviser about the windows having an auto-up feature. Auto-down works fine, and I have the extra "click" where I thought auto-up would be, but it doesn't work. Instead, at the normal "up" position nothing happens, and where the auto-up would be the windows just roll up normally when I hold the switch.

My adviser said that this was normal for soft-top Z4's, and only available for the hard-tops. My question for those of you with soft-tops: do your windows have the auto-up feature? My Z4 is an '06si with the power-top option. Thanks!

"service adviser" HA! I say.
It works on the soft top, but you have to run a calibration regimen first, so it knows where "up" is.

That's what I thought! I'll give that a shot when I get home from work tonight. As for the 1st stage "close" position, is it normal for nothing to happen when the switch is in that position? The windows only roll up if I hold the switch in the 2nd stage position...

The first stage is normal up, the second would be auto up.

OH! I think Auto-up is also an option you can set with Progman.
Hopefully yours is enabled.

Auto up works just dandy on my 06 3.0 SI. Your service advisor is wrong. Follow the calibration procedure above. When closed, the windows should also dip about 1/4 inch when you open the doors and snug back up against the window seal when you close the doors.

Garage List
I forgot what it was supposed to do, but after I installed the smartTOP controller I noticed I had an issue with it only doing 1 function when the button feels like it should be 2. Its been so long since I drove my car now that I cant remember what it did before the install and what it does after.

Well I just tried the window calibration procedure. Didn't seem to make any difference. I noticed that after the "Erasure of initialization" step, my auto-down still worked no matter now many times I tried to erase it. According to that post, it sounded like the auto features should be disabled by that point.

The other strange thing is that the windows do dip about 1/4 inch when I open the doors, so that part is working normally. It's just the auto-up that's not working.

That's the strange part. Like wolfman said, the first position is manual up, the second is auto up.
Just like down.

That always seems to work. I've never lost my auto down, but I've lost the auto up after having the battery disconnected.

autoup should work from the factory, it doesn't have to be turned on in progrman, unless someone else has turned it off first.

Just another chime in. I have a 2006 3.0si roady and has always had autoup on the windows. Just pull all the way past the click and let go, windows slide up.

However, I do have an annoying problem with the windows going up partway and bouncing back down at random once activating autoup. Whats up with that?

That is a safety feature that is supposed to prevent a child from injuring or choking themselves with the power window. If an obstruction is detected, the window stops closing and opens. My car does that every now and then too and I think it just means that an adjustment is needed.

Also, if you close both of them, make sure you let the first one get all the way closed before starting the second one.
The slight power dip when the first window hits the top will stall the second one just enough that it thinks it hit something.

I know were in a litigious society, but I wonder how many children have been smashed in the window of a convertible roadster.

Anyway. Will research adjusting. Not a big deal just annoying when its cold out or raining.

Thanks for all the responses guys! Looks like I'll have to make another appointment at the stealership. Thankfully they gave me a 60 day warranty when I bought the car!
