What's a fair price on this Z4MR?

I am looking at a 2007 M Roadster, black/red, 63k miles. The car has the typical assortment of options: premium package, heated seats, etc. The interior is a 9/10 and the exterior is a 7/10 (there is typical front bumper damage, the finish on one of the OEM wheels is delaminating, and there's one or two scratches that have had touch-up paint applied).

What's a fair price for this car? The seller is asking $24k firm.

It won't sell for $24k in that condition unless you're in a really hot market. I see you're in San Francisco, if the car is in SF it might sell eventually given how crazy prices there are.

There are still quite a few of these cars around with 50k or less miles. Its not a very desirable color to most (probably least sought after second only to silver). Its not a very desirable interior color to most either.

While that would be an average+ condition compared to most cars, you have to remember that most Z4Ms are driven much less and are babied, so they are in general in very good condition, excluding heavily tracked cars. So I would say that is average to slightly below average condition.

Overall I look at that car and see nothing exciting, no special options like extended leather or nav, not a great color, not perfect condition, not especially low miles, etc., so I would just pass. I think its worth around $20k, maybe $22k absolute tops. But I think it would be a very hard sell on the East Cost at $22k.

For $24k, you should be able to get one much nicer if you travel a little outside of San Francisco. If you fly a significant distance (like to the east cost) you will find a MUCH nicer one for that price. For whatever reason, a little extra money buys you a big increase in value on these cars (much lower mileage or much better condition).

You have a BIG advantage in that you're looking for a convertible in the fall heading into the winter. If you wait another month or two, you'll have you pick of cars on in the midwest/east cost at extremely low prices because people do not want to store them until the spring.

Look at my post history and you'll find a pre-purchase inspection sheet I made up, probably posted about 2 years ago.

Good luck with the hunt!

Sigh sucks how the zmr isn't worth as much as the coupe. Low 20s is about right for that condition car. 21-22k. Good luck with your search.

Your post got me to look at a couple of price estimation web sites. NADA says the car you are looking at should be priced around $22K. Laughable to me was Edmunds.com who estimated by pristine 2006 with 18,500 miles at $15,500 private party and $17,700 dealer retail. I would love to see where they are finding cars being sold at those numbers.... NADA estimated my cars value at $27K.

Thanks for all the advice. I think this car started out asking several thousand more. The seller says he paid $38k a year ago ( ) from a BMW dealership. It is the lowest-priced M Roadster in that mileage range within 500 miles of SF. To get examples around 30k miles you have to go to LA and/or pay a few thousand dollars more.

The exterior condition is a 7/10, but if the driver's front wheel was refinished or replaced I'd call it an 8/10. It's "clean" or "average" at worst, in my opinion.

Anyway, just dialoging on this. Thanks for the advice!

It's telling me $21,950 for trade-in and $25,450 for dealer retail... note I get the same price whether I enter the zip code for San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Washington DC.

The owner said the BMW dealer offered him $23,000 as a trade-in.

My mistake- the figures I posted were for an 06 with the same mileage. If he paid $38k a year ago he got raped!!!

Considering I own a Z4MR (with about the same miles) I would like to say it's worth $50k, however I bought mine almost 3 years ago with around 30k miles for like $24,500 OTD. So yeah $24k seems high for that car.

That seems like an unusually low price for a 30k mile example. You are a good example of someone that would probably sell at a relatively cheap price if you decided to let yours go since you got a great deal on the front end.

I would also look at Autotrader and what they are selling for there. Last I checked there were about 75 M Roadsters for sale so should give an idea of what this seller is competing against. Also consider the cost and hassle of traveling in the overall deal (I would have paid $1500 more for my car if I could have found it local over a flight).

If he is trying to justify the selling price based on what he paid for it he is way off. Completely irrelevant what he paid.

Actually since my memory is shit, I went back and looked at posts of when I first got it. Seems it was more like just a tad over $25k OTD.

However, if the OP is interested, I would let it go for $50k

Really? Most Z4M owners I've met have said that they would have preferred red leather. Unless they were just being polite...

That had to be trade in values because those are nowhere near accurate.

It was not. I was shocked as well. It gave a base trade in value of around 10k. I am thinking they have the values mixed up with a standard Z4.

No, he was justifying the selling price based on the dealer's trade-in offer of $23k. He was sad to be losing $14k in one year but had a "shit happens" attitude about it.

Autotrader does indicate that if you're willing to go national the best prices are low-$20k's in the 60-100k mile range and mid-$20k's in the 30-60k mile range.

A loud car should have a loud interior.
