Think I'm getting some RE-71s to go with my suspension upgrades this year. Good discussion, thanks!

I hope the OP got the info he wanted too!

Yes, Definitely a great discussion!
I've been on the fence with the RE71 since we finished our season this year.
After this discussion, I'm Definitely going to give them a go for the spring.

I have you to thank

I found a 10 day Black Friday online coupon yesterday while driving to Tires Plus. They gave me an installed / balanced price of $ 1,131.81, then he wiped the tax to give me an out the door price of $ 1, 057.76, then added on the Coupon which was $ 60.00 off a set of 4, runs out Nov 30th, for a total of $ 997.76 out the door. Get them installed on Thurs, CAN'T WAIT TO REALLY DRIVE THIS CAR !

Camber settings / suspension

I found out through local BMW Stealership ( $ 280 for an oil change ) that my car was owned by a retired professional race car driver in the area, they have sold 10 BMW's to him over the last 15 years and he owns a local race shop. No wonder I couldn't find ANY service records at first. The service manager actually printed everything out for me, that he had done then cut his info out.

I have had the car up on a lift, at a generic mechanic shop near the indy dealer BEFORE I bought from MyVehicleAgent.com. He did a full look over ( with me at his side ) then he plugged in a diagnostic hand held and it checked 37 features and they all turned up amazing numbers. I'm half a gear head at best, but in not knowing exactly what to look for, I'm not sure what I have. I do have a local ( with in walking distance ) shop called German Imports, I have friends that have used the shop for years and love them. Got a quick visual inspection Fri from Mechanic that has worked there for 25 years. He was impressed with car. He said he has never seen a Z4MR in the shop. One of the things I liked about this car is that they are NOT common. But of course there is the negative side to this, as not a lot of mechanics know this car and it's needs. Just another reason I'm THANKFUL for this forum. I'm checking around some other shops in Clearwater/St Pete, hoping to find a performance oriented shop.

I did not mention this in previous post I got the RE-71's in
235-40 / 265-35

I have to look into Plastic Dipping the wheels, didn't even know I could.

I've been warned by a good friend who worked for Vogue Wheels, to stay away from quick cheap powder coatings. They wont last long.

Thanks Everyone, JJ

Cool

I'll be over that way on Thursday, as I'm getting my HD photo shoot of the 240Z as it will be on sale through MyVehicleAgent.com They are in that same block.

I'm getting my ducks in order for DIY oil change, spark plug change, coil change, CVD if it has not been done yet, cleaning vanos selenoid, bought new WIX air filter. Valve adjustment ( professionally done, quoted $ 620 at local shop. Does that sound fair ? They also quoted me $ 120 for oil change, at O'Reihly I'd spend $ 100 in oil/filter kit, so for $20, even though I love working on my cars, seems worth it to drop it off, walk home in 5 mins and walk over when done.

Thanks again for your wisdom. I've driven the car 200 miles so far and just love the way it feels. I gotta come up with catchy tag line like yours DC

RE-71 Update

All I can is WOW ! These tires are even better than I could have imagined. Crazy sticky, seem stiff in the cornering dept, great standing start traction. I used Turtle Wax Enduro Black ( it's a shiny black dye ) on them. They shine sooooo nicely now. Plus it lasts for 6 months, love this product.

Now, can anyone tell me why there is so much sticky brake dust on my wheels ?

I have read that Akebono brake pads will produce no dust. Anyone have any experience with these or others ? Looking for maximum stopping power, reduced heat build up to combat fade. I don't really care about longevity, since I will drive aggressively, but put less than 5K/yr on car.

Thanks to all that advised me to spend more to get more of what I wanted.

I will go to my first driving event Dec 17 with FAST AutoX in Brooksville.

You can have clean wheels or really good brakes. Not much option in between. The Akebono's will leave your wheels spotless and are good for street driving. They need some heat to develop initial grip so you'll feel the need for a lot of pedal pressure when they're cold so first runs at an autocross event are "interesting". You'll get plenty of mileage out of them, but if you do an actual track day (PDX, HPDE, etc.) you'll note a lot of braking power loss once they start to get warm.

So to conclude what has been said, on OEM wheels, 235's in the front and 275's in the back shouldn't be a problem correct? I'm in need of tires asap!

What if the car is lowered on H&R's?

IMO 265s are best on stock wheels.

Typical rim width for 275/35 x 18 tires is 9"-11" so 275 will fit on your 9" rear wheels.

That's what I found from what I've read in the past couple of weeks. It seems nearly impossible to fit 275's in the rear though when I put my hand in there and feel the gap from the tire to the fender well. I've read about the offsets too but can't seem to understand how that works. I'm glad you're enjoying your ride with the new tires man, enjoy!

I went to the Speed Syndicate, actually talked with the owner ( Chris ? ) for quite awhile. He was having a photoshoot being done in front of his new shop. It's right next to the old shop, but much bigger. We talked about a lot of subjects and I at least know that they have a lot to offer. Thanks for the tip, I had seen the name in my research but it was nice to have the recommendation.

For several years I've heard nothing but superlatives about Chris Vallee and Speed Syndicate so glad you were able to hook up there!

With the correct offset and camber 275's will work even on track on a 10 inch wheel . My preferred track set up is 265/35/18 up front on 18x9 and 285/30/18 on 18x10 in the back.

I keep barely resisting the temptation to get a 2nd set of wheels/tires. The only thing that's saved me is the class restrictions for SCCA autocross.

They are priced the nearly the same, tough to find available and have similar stats. Anyone have any wisdom/experience to share. Went to my local Tires Plus, $ 999.76 out the door. I asked for any other suggestions, he offered none. I loved my Nitto's, anyone try the NT-05's ? I could save a few hundred $.
Thanks JJ Going with F 235/40 / R 265/35

PS - Everyone agree best for my 06 Z4MR 18 OEM ?
Congratulations on the find, not far off from the 240 in styling eh?

Size, yes, for stock wheels I'd go with the F 235/40 / R 265/35 and avoid any pinch/crown potential. There's enough tire there to dissipate heat, not so much as to over tire the wheel for its size.

You could just plastidip the wheels for now and later buy some Apex wheels like ARC8s. Those are lighter, and deals come up from time to time in for sale that will be priced at about 2x what the repairs will be. Just a thought.

On tires I'm not a fan of the NT05 (absolute nightmare in any kind of wet, not great on track IMO) compared to other tires like the Super Sport, the Bridgestones, or Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Specs. I've ZII Dunlops and Super Sports on track and on the street, have friends who run the 11s and 71s on track.

Both Bridgestones seem to have a bit more grip but wear a bit faster than the Dunlops on track from what I've seen. YYMD. Note: the NT05 isn't a "bad" tire, it's just compared to the other choices it's not a good.

I'm not enough of a Bridgestone user/expert to offer up choice 11 vs. 71.

Lastly, not sure if you are running a stock suspension or not, but, if you are an want to dial in more front camber there's a cheap way to do that!

Ask away on anything else!
