squeaking sound next to drivers right ear
Greetings gents. On my 03 with the top down there is a chirping squeak sound in my right ear. Hard to pinpoint while trying to drive safely. Anybody?

It could be anything based on your description. More information would help. Is the sound constant or does it come and go? Does it make the noise when you're moving regardless of speed or does it only happen at either low speeds or highway speeds? Is it worse when you go over bumps or into/out of turns?

This is quite common.
I thought I had birds following me. It's the lock that holds the top down. Try a search. There's a service bulletin floating around that tells you how to lubricate it. I never bothered. I just picture happy birds following me.

The plastic of the center section that houses the storage and GPS disc rubs against the sections on either side of that on my car, making that same sound from time to time.

+1, I tried to grease the bastard and put felt tape all over that center panel. The only thing that worked was trading into an M I believe cars 2006+ don't have the squeaky lock mechanism anymore

Whs. squeeze some thick electrical grease into the lock hole. It will nearly remove it. Grease every 3 months.

I found this document some time ago: https://www.dowcorning.com/content/p...80-3333-01.pdf
I couldn't find a small amount of the Molykote D-96 or D-9610 which from the chart seemed more appropriate for lubricating interior plastic surfaces which would bind against each other, but I was able to buy a small tub of the EM-30L on Ebay. I haven't tried it as of yet (my noise mysteriously disappeared the second I received the Molykote). |
