What could cause a bearing to fail?
I Just got an 03 Z4 w/24K and the dealer is replacing the right rear bearing. Could this be caused by some other mechanical problem or is it most likely a product defect? (the warranty runs out 9/07!)
Also, all 4 brakes replaced. 24K seems low??? Previous owner was in the DC area - does stop and go driving wear brakes that fast? One more (this newbie is a pain), the inspection shows due in 1400 miles. Would it be in best my interest to make sure I hit the inspection before the warranty is up in September? Thank God for the 3 months of warranty... |

My previous car, '04, Z4 3.0i also had a bad rear right bearing. I had it replaced last October. I also had about 25k miles on it.

I don't feel so lonely now, but it still seems odd. I hope its just a one-off thing rather than a glitch in the production line or something...
I assume you had no problems related to the bearing? The heat from a bad bearing would seem to be capable of more problems. BTW, Thanks for your reply rabman5. |

Other than that it took my service rep 3 months to find the problem there was no other damage.
Also, definitely get those 1400 miles before the warranty runs out! |

wheel bearings are a mechanical part, and all of them will eventually fail
although 24K does seem early... extra wear could be from poor manufacturing (bad lube, bad tolerances) could be from hard use (big wheels and sticky tires can put extra load on them if the car's ran hard) |

Bearings are less likely to fail if they are serviced and lubed regularly. They should last at least 50,000 miles. 25,000 is definately early for a bearing to go bad.

I've wondered if the wheel spacers from Rogue would accelerate bearing wear.

yeah, new bearings on a chevy or something similar run about $20 a wheel
our bearings include the ABS hub sensor and run about 10 times more than some other vehicles replacement costs |

Here is the wheel bearing. It does appear to be a cartridge. Wonder how easily it comes out?

Don't feel so bad. I had the left rear bearing go at around 23K miles and since they've replaced it I've been trouble free. I just took it in to have the front brakes replaced today at 28K, but I do a good amount of city driving for my commute.
