Attrition may add to desirability as well. In regard to the coupes, of the 1815, at least 5-6 were "pre-production" cars, so I understand, that never made it to the road (usually they crush these so-called preproduction cars). From the forums and the one car I witnessed get totaled, there is another at least 6 that are no longer with us. Don't know as much about attrition with the roadsters, but with the coupes I'm quite certain they have to be into the 17xx's by now. Not a lot of numbers lost, yes, I agree, but as more and more meet their maker, there are simple less to go around.....

Cult Car..... I love my Z and I love the color (sepang) but these cars are VERY different from what "most" people like. So for that reason I always say you either love it or hate it since I mainly see those reactions to my ride. In any case, I hope to add another ///M when they decide to produce it again in the Z?????.

Hard for me personally to answer this because I dont know what else 60k could buy me in 20 years. But its a great thought process you just took with this.

edit:
If a new m3 costs $260k in 20 years, then i might pay $60k for a good condition e86m in 20yrs.

This ratio isn't too far off from paying ~$15k today for a very good condition 2002tii versus ~$65k for a new m3 today. (& it takes a special person to pay $15k for the right 2002tii today).

C'mon someone else must have an opinion on that litmus test.... (i love this stuff)

Not a chance. Headroom is tight already, and my Depends will raise my seating position too much.

Considering that with inflation and such, 30k today will have about the same buying power as 50k in 20 years; maybe it's not so far off. A restored pristine 2002tii does fetch more than 15k today.

The reason I think the M models will be classics is that they have everything that makes a classic:

1. They are the last generation of a purists sports car (NA inline 6, MT).

2. They're not the comfiest cars, they're quirky and hard to drive, but these things give it character and will cement its reputation.

3. The low production numbers.

4. The fact that it got great reviews when it came out, but was then forgotten and underrated.

5. Unusual styling.

The most important thing is car collectors/enthusiasts/connoisseurs perception. If it stays below the radar (like it has), then it'll only be a classic to those that have driven it. But I do have faith that it will be re-descovered or re-evaluated in the future and it will become an instant classic.

I'm not sure it's most, it's just people posting about the cars they own (kinda natural to do I think). We also just happen to have a chunk of active forum members who own the "M" version.

There are quite a few 2.5, 3.0, and 3.0si members as well. I wouldn't read too much into it, and feel free to jump into discussions or voice opinions. No one ever said this was an "M" only thread--title is Z4 and first post is not "M" specific--all Z4 owners are welcome here!

indeed you are spot on about restored/pristine 2002tii levels today. But I wanted to comp it to a 'good or very good' example though, as the litmus test asked what we'd pay for an M in 'good condition'.

I hope the rest of your list proves to work out for us, I'm rooting for it to happen like this! And if it doesn't, its still been an amazing car to have enjoyed over the years.

And as my wife has recently been saying a lot more to me: "YOU ARE NOT NORMAL". this could have something to do with it. I keep trying to goad her into wanting an e85 so she'll also become rabid maniacs like the rest of us.

Exactly! The enjoyment we get out of 'using' these cars now is far greater than any speculative investor will ever get out of their bubble-wrapped 'collector' pieces!

I like my 3.0 SI so much that after three years, I still own it. Outright, too.

It is very challenging to guess what will be collectible in 10-20 years or even further down the road. When I was in high school in the late 1970's you could get a mid-60's Mustang or Camaro for a song. (I almost bought a 1968 Camaro for $800). Really, no one wanted one.

I could tell a similar story about Gibson guitars like the Les Paul that are now highly collectible.

IMO what makes a car (or a thing) collectible is that it is a perfect embodiment of a type. By the standard I think all Z cars will be very desirable, some may command very high prices.

The combination of performance and innovative styling especially with the Z4 roadster and coupe has very few competitors (within a certain price range), with the exception perhaps of Porsche. Cool vintage convertibles will always be sought after by a certain segment of the car-buying public, ahem, middle-aged men, and the coupe is so singular that it will look cool and futuristic in 2050.

(As an aside, I drive around a lot in the middle of country and coupes are as rare as hen's teeth and Z4M's hard to find as well. Sometimes you need a little exposure to generate the buzz for collectors.)

Having watched the Z3M prices for around 3 years, and their constant rise, I would have to say the same effect will happen to the Z4M.

Many S54 Z3M's are now in the same price range as a nice Z4M. A few years ago, that wasn't the case. It wasn't until the prices went down, and then people started buying, which is why the prices took off with the demand.

I think it will be a very good car value wise. Not as good as a 993 911 Turbo, which are going for the same prices as 997 turbos, but I think the value will do well.

Prices will probably dip for a year or two, but I think most of us would be able to get out of it what we put into our Z4M's in a couple years.

There's no way mine will be collectible, even though I look after it well... I just can't stop driving it! Hyper-miler z4 anyone?

I wouldn't buy one as an investment, but I don't see the m coupe's price going down anymore (assuming mileage doesn't increase).

Still, one shouldn't be too optimistic about pricing. I watched a Wheeler Dealer episode the other day (I know, dubious), and they bought an M5 for 4000 GBP. Granted, it was pretty ragged, but that's not much money for an M car. I think they sold it for like 6000, fixed up.

I know those 3/5 series are much less rare than our cars, but still. I wouldn't consider our cars an investment right now either.
