cost of MX
I'm taking my 06 Z4 3.0i in to some get some work done on the 7th. The brake pads are worn out and need to be replaced plus it's due for an inspection @ 35000+ miles. I opted for a BMW courtesy car rather than a hertz rental. This will be the first time that i've taken the car in since the service plan and warranty have expired. The serivce advisor was reluctant to talk about the cost over the phone and told me he'd give me an estimate once i brought the car in. I was wondering if anyone knows about what i can expect to pay? thanks

I'd be a little worried if the SA won't give you an estimate up front. These things are pretty much standardized and they should be able to quote within about $100 of what your final cost will be. Buyer beware.

I would make sure you get an estimate before any work is done. That way, you know what that stealer was going to charge you when you go pay 30% less from a reputable independent shop. My guess is $375 for whatever you get done. |

BMW dealership shop rates are around $100/hr. They'll charge you 1-2 hours labor to swap the pads + parts. I don't know what the inspection entails. He should be able to give you a prelimenary quote for those. If he does not, ask what the standard labor rate for replacing pads is? Do the same with the inspection. That should all be specified. If he still won't, take it to another dealer. There might be additional stuff that might come up depending on the condition of the car, but they should be able to quote you on the standard stuff up front, and let you know about anything in addition after you take the car in.
You can do the pads yourself IMO. Not hard to do. Plenty of DIYs around...

If it is just the pad, they may charge you around $200, if they need to change rotors, then look at about $500 to $600 total for the brake.
I don't know what they'll do at 35k inspection but it should start from $250. I take that as a joke, or assume that you havent been at the bimmer stealership yet. |

I need a brake fluid flush next month(I know it's easy to DIY but I don't want to mess with it myself). The local dealer quoted $195. The indie BMW repair shop near my office quoted $125. Guess where I will be going? I would recommend you look for a good indie shop in your area for future repairs.

thank you all. the dealer did provide a quote prior to doing any MX. The pads were worn out, the front rotors needed to be replaced because they were worn thin and i got the oil changed. The cost of the parts was $374, $226 for labor plus $55 for "COG and supplies" and $46 tax. It certainly wasn't cheep but im happy with the work and service.
