tire question?

I need to replace the rears on my new '06 Z4m ASAP, going with stock size,
the fronts are newish, Conitsport contacts, thinking about Hankooks to save a little $ in case I end up going to 19" in the future

Finally the question?

Any issues with mismatch fronts and rears?
Guy at tirerack said "no problem" since they'd be the same type tire

ps any general comments on the Conti's?

That doesn't sound like a good idea to me. But, I guess if the handling characteristics are similar you may get away with it.

I've always heard that you shouldn't mix brands but never got a definitive answer as to why not. I'm a bit OCD so I would keep the same brand of tires.

I swapped out my stock Contis last year for the Dunlop Direzza Star Specs and never EVER looked back (except to occasionally turn my nose up at the Contis). They're much better street tires than the stock Contis - stickier and not as hard. I'd bite the bullet and buy four new ones - all the same.

p.s. Finnegan will agree with me and then some. I think he's having a secret love affair with those tires.

It's not ideal, but I wouldn't throw away two perfectly good tires. I've mismatched tires numerous times. You'll probably use up the new rears before the fronts are worn. Get the Hankooks, accept the understeer, and replace all four next time around. If you don't like the results, replace the fronts sooner.

You could try it for a week and if you find the difference between the fronts/rears too great you could just replace the fronts.

I'm curious why nobody has tried BFGoodrich TW KDA2 as a cheap non-runflat. I had them on my Infiniti G35 and loved them. When my current runflats die I'll get them.

Personally, I'd go with new rubber (Hankooks, or Star Specs) all around and try to sell the newer Contis to someone on the forum.

If that's not an option then what Pokey said.

if you're just thinking about upgrading to 19", there's no reason to switch out all tires if the 2 front ones are still useable. But if you're planning to stick with your current wheels, go for yokohama advan ad08, it'll excel any other tire meant for street/track.

Toyo Tires

I went with Toyo T1R tires after test riding several friends cars and the normal internet due diligence. Ride and road noise is a vast improvement over the OE Bridgestones. Since I changed over from run flats, I bought the ContiComfortKit from Tire Rack for confidence to keep in the trunk.

Price is higher than the Hankook, but those tires are real low end round bricks I don't think you would be happy with. Save them for your uncle's oldsmobile, not a vehicle like our Z4s.

Mainly I am really enjoying the improved handling with the Toyo's. Tires have tons of grip and are very predictable. When they do break away at extreme cornering, it is smooth and progressive, so recovery is easy. Haven't had a tank-slapper-on-four yet.
