Portable Jack
Since I've swapped out my run flats for regular tires I've been wondering what would be a good portable jack to purchase that would NOT destroy the rubber thingy under the car and also securely hold with it slipping off.
Any input appreciated. |

Not at all sexy, but the $25 Black Torin jack from Walmart works just fine. Fits nicely in a tool bag I have behind the seat. I've given it a test run and it lifted the car safely while changing the tire. No marks or damage.

Do you carry a spare with you
I have read that some Z4 owners change out the run flats for regular tires. I wondered if that meant that they carry a spare...what do you do in case of a blowout?

I carry a full size spare, yeah I know overkill and heavy but I don't drive this thing like Mario Andretti, I'm just blessed to even have the thing.

Can I be devils advocate here?
When was the last time you had a blowout and needed a new tire right away. In the last 35+ years of driving, I have had only ONE blowout type of tire issue. Every other issue did not disable me along the side of the road. eg. nails, etc. I have the M mobility kit in the Coupe. In the Roadster, I ditched the RFT's and went to Walmart and spent $20.00 on a kit with some Slime and a compressor. I also have a tire plug kit ($6.00 at Harbor Freight) just in case.... but if you don't like Slime, you can get some TyreGardian if that makes you feel better. Why carry the weight and take up space if you really don't need to. |

Also a very good option. I weighed both before spending the money. I honestly have not had to change a tire on the side of the road in years. And I completely agree with the logic.
I figured it this way if I do need it, it takes all of 10-15 minutes to replace and I'm back on the road and have the flexibility of getting the repair done at my leisure. If I slime it, I'll be biting my nails hoping it took. It really is dealers choice on what you feel more comfortable with. The mobility kit option is the less expensive of the options. But I'll more than likely get at least 2/3rds of what I spent back on my spare when I sell it later when I sell the car. |

If you don't like Slime or don't trust it, the best stuff out there is Tyre Guardian..

I concur with Shipkiller. I've only had one blowout where a pothole ripped a gash in the tire's sidewall. All other flats were slow air leaks that were temporarily repaired with the M Mobility kit, Slime, and/or tire plugs. Roadside assistance can always be an emergency backup for towing service.

I had a gash in my sidewall from a pothole a month ago. Paid $150 for towing, $175 for new tire, and $25 to mount and balance it.
wasn't too happy

AAA, works for all your vehicles and can tow your car up to 200 miles. Your spouse can be added for a minimal fee and it can be used on any vehicle as long as you are in it when it needs road side assistance or towing.

A few weeks ago I picked up this gnarly shard in one of my new rear tires (285 Hankooks). Really eff'd up my aero side skirts trying to use an e36 jack, so I do not recommend getting one of those. The e46 jack looks interesting... I might get one for next time.
The only positive thing was that Hankook replaced my damaged tire for free with a brand new tire under their Road Hazard Warranty since I was still within the first 25% of tread wear. |
