So, I can tell you that running no muffler will give you no benefit and in most cases you will have a decrease in performance.

Was the loss greater than the inherent dyno error? Were the pulls done with mufflers on first and removed next? I'm sorry if I seem a little incredulous but I just find that very hard to believe.

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to the next update. Interested in what the difference in sound and performance will be between the race and street versions.

HP loss with exhaust systems is common with the S54 motor. This is why most companies try to just have it not lose power or gain maybe 1-5hp. The stock exhaust flows very well it just happens to be ugly I had 3 different exhaust systems on my M3's 2 of them added nothing and a 3rd lost 5 hp.

My Supersprint gained a staggering 3hp when I did a back to back dyno with it. The reason I spent the $$ was it was the only exhaust at the time that did not drone was good looking was lighter then stock and was not rice loud. I think if you back to back dyno most low cost aftermarket systems for the Z4M you might find power loss in several systems.

Props to RPI for not making something just because the demand is there

I wouldn't expect to gain any significant HP in this car based on what I've read, I just disagree with the assertion that you would lose HP by removing the mufflers. Thats one of those long standing old-wives tales that just bothers me.

The reason I'm interested in an exhaust is purely for the sound. I appreciate the vendors dedication to the quality of his product I just find it a little frustrating when some vendors (and I'm not saying this one) justify ridiculous pricing based on R&D of simple systems such as muffler cans.

It's not the increasing the flow out the back loses the power, it's that the software steps in as a safety feature and cuts the power. BMW is known for it particularly when comes to the S54.

There was no gain. Only a loss. I simply post what I see on the dyno. People can take it any way they want to. As for r&D, we do a lot of it and its going to reflect on the price. If its not going to sell, we wont waste time testing and making several prototypes only to sell something at a loss. If people complain about the price, we just dont make it. Laidback knows and have seen how much time and $ we have spent already on this project.

We're still working on a few things. The M5 guys are really bugging us to finish our GT system for the cars. We are about 2 weeks out from shipping our exhausts for the E60 M5 so the Z4 stuff will come after that.

Hehe, sounds good man. Thanks to everyone for being patient with us. The exhausts are pretty tempermental with this engine so we have to really spend some time with the development. I dont want to make a product that only sounds better.

If backpressure is an issue, a converging/diverging throat should help.

We did some initial tests and production drawings. The problem we are having right now is cost. If we were to design the system the way we wanted to, the muffler section would be close to $2k.
We have people copying stuff to save $129 so I'm not sure how we can put something in production that is going to be at the $2k range.

Thank you for the update. Too bad the costs exceeded more then you expected. However I would still be intrested in the exhaust for $2k, but including X-pipe, mufflers only is a bit too expensive..

Let's see what others have to say.

Yeah, i dont think we can do all 3 sections for that price. Ill hav to wait and see as we explore different options. The muffler is what is killing us right now. The muffler design we want to use is very untraditional and quite costly to make.
