code P2096?!...ESS and RPI mods, still there!
while cruising from Columbia to Charlotte last night for the 'Shinedown' concert, light kicked on. the pocked scanner shows code P2096; 'lean post cat'. mod list is below. no performance change noticed
ESS flash with the catless/header/o2 delete and exhaust option stock cats/header still installed RPI scoop/filter installed after flash RPI axleback exhaust after flash car is a '06 Z4MR with 74k miles(first owner put ~70k in just 18 months). I know that the vavles need to be adjusted, along with the inspection2 and wheel alignment. i have had no issues with the car, minus this code. any ideas? thoughts? ~Ryan Last edited by rcodea; 11-05-2009 at 03:30 PM.. |

That's an O2 sensor issue, whatever you're using to turn off the catless code is not working properly, or needs to be adjusted.

P2096(post catalyst fuel trim system too lean bank 1)
It could be a few things. A bad or dirty MAF or intake turbulence issue from non OEM intake or Bad secondary O2 sensor. |

i'll look into cleaning the MAF. any way to trouble shoot for a bad MAF? possibly bechcheck for resistances? Intake is OEM, minus the scoop and filter. I have not read any such issues using these parts together. anyone know of a way to troubleshoot for a possible bad secondary O2? given the flash, can i just disconect secondary O2 and forget about it? ~Ryan |

Try to clean off the MAF with CFR MAF cleaner and have the code cleared. This is most likely your issue and the code should stay off. You do not want to disconect the 02 sensors. |

I had a similar problem on my old 95 M3. Some reading would go outside the levels the computer wants to see for just a short period of time and it would throw the O2 sensor error. Even after the reading returns to normal the Check Engine light stays on until after so many cold restarts, then it turns off. I didn't invest any time in it because it only came on every other month and was on for just a few days.

Just FYI, I have headers no cats in my car and until I put my o2 sim in I was getting p2096 and p2098 as well as the catalyst inefficiency codes. The only way I was able to clear those codes (p2096 & p2098) was to do a full adaptations reset or else they would just come back after exactly two driving sessions. It took me a good two weeks of wondering why my o2 sim wasn't working until l discovered that. So even if you have your DME re flashed to disregard your rear o2's you may still need to have your adaptions reset untill those codes will go away.

ok, so after cleaning the MAF, and driving it, the code cleared without going to the dealer.
It came back tonight; 55mph, 2400rpm, 5th gear on a level road. i'll try cleaning it again. next will be the dealer to have the adaptions reset completely reset. any other ideas? i am not familure with the adaptation values issue, do i need to tell the dealer something specific to get them cleared? is there anyone else that can do this asside from the dealer...not a big fan of my dealer! ~Ryan Last edited by rcodea; 11-05-2009 at 03:31 PM.. |

CODES ARE BACK!
now throwing a 'p2098' and 'p0041' for codes...both pointing again to the second bank O2 sensor. since the 'p2096', i did the following -cleaned MAF using MAF cleaner spray -dealer did vavle adjustment -dealer cleared the adaptive values -dealer cleared the 'p2096' code -dealer did oil change i have put ~100 miles on the car since the dealer performed the above the code keeps throwing while cruising, not when driving aggressively or around town. any other ideas guys? ~Ryan |

I'd say it would be really difficult.

Care to elaborate on this? ^^^^^
Most cars with Headers run cleaner than stock, and the ess tune isn't a "Dirty" one from what I understand. Most smog tech have NO idea what they're looking for, except the obvious ones! Most have NEVER seen our cars so ??? |

I think even with the ESS fix the computer still throws a code which gets read by the computer when you take it in for inspection. Is there any way around this?
