spy camera on z4 for fun

1. Signal of reversing light is used to start rear camera in usually. So we can't get the back vision at ordinary time.So I add a switch and a diode to make it possible.

diode type:1.5KE12A 1500W 12V

Signal wire from the reversing light and get through of the trunk.

The switch.

Front camera can be turned to face inside and record drvier and passenger.

Driving recorder

Hope z4 will record a hot story when go to night club.

small size video for youtube:

Very impressive! Nice work!

I have a dash cam, but forward only. Your solution has the the front and rear integrated through the upgraded multimedia system, correct? Is that multimedia system also storing the recording data, or is data storage separate but the multi-media system serving as a playback device?

Thank you for sharing these improvements. It's nice to see new members taking things new directions and making enhancements.

Thanks you!
The multimedia system hava a USB plug which I put it in the mesh bag beside the foot. It is 32G for storing mp3,FLAC APE,mkv, etc and also for front/rear camera cyclic recording date. And I can shift to the realtime video or playback by touch screen.

FWIW, 1.5KE12A isn't a general purpose diode, it's a transient suppressor.
The reverse breakdown voltage is only 11.4V.
I would suggest 1N400x.

I guess it won't be too difficult. Find the video input wire and use the reversing light singal.

Think Ron Stygar did it way back in the day, and it definitely wasn't an easy install

Yeah I have a backup camera and front camera hooked up to my nav. It works perfectly. It wasn't toooooo hard. Just a lot of work routing the wires to look OEM since I'm anal.

Hi
I'm trying to find a path from the 'outside' rear camera into the trunk for a backup cam. Can you expand on exactly where your rear camera is mounted and how you got the wiring from there into the trunk (boot) area for attachment to the reverse lights?
Thanks

If you remove the rear bumper cover, you will find two empty popouts on each side of the car leading into the trunk.

Look here:

Disregard the removed tail light and fender.

Thanks. I'd seen mixed results on the bumper cover removal and wanted to avoid that if at all possible. With a little wiggling and cursing, I was able to snake and then pull a cable from the (removed) driver side license plate light receptacle up diagonally and to the (removed) driver side tail light cluster inside the trunk area - without removing the bumper cover. All is now well and the system installed just fine.

For those who may have an interest in rear backup/reverse cam installation, tap the Brown wire for ground, and the blue with green stripe for switched 12v only when the reverse light is activated.
I gained access into the cockpit through the storage bin between the seats (small holes drilled), then through the driver side subwoofer cavity (removed grille for access) down to the left rocker panel trim and up to the dash area. I mounted the 4.3 inch display directly over the (unused - we use an Ultimate Cupholder) cup holder on the driver side dash just left of the steering wheel and adjacent to door (mounted by running a long zip tie vertically around the stored/recessed cup holder and then through one of those adhesive square zip tie mount affixed to the back of the monitor - cinch with zip tie buckle to bottom to keep the monitor from dipping/dropping down).

I currently have the camera and monitor connected to and powered by the reverse light circuit - ground to brown wire, 12v from blue with green stripe.

I'd like to also have the ability to manually activate the camera and monitor for brief periods WITHOUT putting the car in reverse.

I see that the OP has done this, but do not follow his approach. So, can anyone give me a primer on how exactly to do this without frying my tail light harness?

I want to retain the current functionality, i.e. camera and monitor operate when the car is put in reverse. I just want to be able to manually activate them too.
Thanks.
