Terrible gas mileage!

I usually get 13-15 mpg with 90% city driving (LA). The traffic here is bad but not the worst I have seen (SF). Is this normal? Anyone else living in LA or similar cities get such low mileage?

I get about 16-17mpg here in NYC. I would say this is normal gas mileage here.

13-15 mpg in a 2.5 seems VERY low. I average 18-19 with my ///M roadster. Is the heavy LA traffic the cause?

I average 24.5 in the DC area and low 30s on the highway. Maybe it's LA? Maybe it's the driver?

I think there's something else going on here. How many miles on the car? Is the O2 sensor ok? How about your spark plugs? Tire Pressure? Air filter?

I'm getting 21-22mpg in heavy ATL traffic.

The lowest I get in traffic is 19-20 mpg as well. I would say there is something wrong unless everytime the traffic moves your are breaking tread for the 3 ft that you move

The car has 16000 m. on it and my average speed on the last tank was 15.3 mph. Should I take it to the dealership? I live really close to the infamous Santa Monica BMW :P

Driving in LaLa land is no way to get a reading on mileage.
You spend too much time idling in stop&go.

Run a tank or two out in the canyons to accurately asses.

SpaceMan, I have the same car (2003 2.5 sport) and I get 22mpg in town & 29mpg on the highway. And I live in high altitude and generally drive pretty agressively.

Definately go to the dealer to see what is wrong. Have you ever had the oil changed? BMW reccommends oil services based on age for low milage BMWs like your.

I just changed it a few months ago. They change it once a year if the mileage limit isn't reached. I WISH I could get 22mpg in the city Anyone knows a good dealer in LA? (I guess any dealer would be better than SM BWM)

No kidding, the only downside to having an M is you only get about half the gas mileage! I'll keep my 3.0si while I commute to work

you should do a search for MPG

No reason to trade the car in. Might possibly look into a Prius - they turn off when you stop.
