Rollbar Covers
Does anybody know how to remove the rollbar covers?
Collected my Z4 yesterday along with the factory wind deflector and replacement rollbar covers. Have looked at TIS but cannot find any information on removing. Looks like the covers just clip onto the rollbar but if anybody could confirm I would be grateful thanks |

I think they'll just prise apart, but if you have new ones anyway it doesn't matter. From memory, they usually break when you try and remove them.

I recall a "how-to" from Z4UM on installing the wind deflector. I think that they used a putty knife to work open the covers, but as Wondermike described, you can't help but snap a few of the tabs as you go.

thanks for that post, I have been searching all over the net even tried a search on cached z4um site but to no avail. Think i would have struggled without knowing about removing the seatbelt guide. thanks Steve |

I removed the stock rollbar covers to install an OEM wind deflector and they all ended up with broken tabs. A local dealer tech tells me 90% of them die in the process. If you take them off assume they will not be able to be reinstalled.

srhutch I'm in the process of installing the OEM deflector right now. I did this once before to add the OEM deflector to our old Zed.
Like zednick mentioned you'll break some or all of tabs in the process of removing the old covers. First you'll have to remove the seat belt guides located outboard of each cover. There's a hard rubber cap on the top of the guide. I used a screw driver to pop the rubber caps off. Then underneath the belt there is a screw you'll have to remove to take off the bottom part of the guide. You'll need a star hex socket to remove the guide bolts (I'm not at home and don't remember exactly....I think 7mm or 8mm but can confirm on Monday) These have to be removed in order to take off the rubber molding at the bottom of each cover (part # 6 & 7 in diagram). Use two or three putty knives (I am using two plastic types and one rather thick metal one) to open then pry apart the covers slipping them underneath the covers then (this is the hard part!) pry them open one section at the time. The plastic putty knives help open the gap to slip in the metal one. You'll have to put some muscle into it and you'll hear some of the clips snap as you do it (it's OK....that's why you got the new covers). Be sure to get all of the broken clips out of the roll bar cover retainer (part #3on the diagram) before trying to install the new covers. I find it's best to count how many are broken then count how many I recover just to double check. When installing the portions of the wind deflector that fit in each roll bar cover (not the center section between the covers but the little plastic sections in each cover) be sure to position them so the small hangar hooks (you'll see them if you look at the top center section of the inserts) towards the front of the car. Believe it or not they serve as hooks to hang clothes on while traveling (thank god for the old DIY or I never would have noticed). Sorry but I'm traveling this weekend but will post pics and a short diy when finished next week. I'm sure it would make more sense if I had all of the photos ready to post but I won't complete the install before next week (it seems that I can't find black roll bar covers to replace the ///M covers so I've got to paint the silver replacements.....that's another DIY to post later). Below are some photos of the covers I removed. You can see where some of the clips are broken. I've also added some showing on part #3 where you'll find the clips that broke off. You can also see where I've removed the seat belt guides in the photos # 3 and #4.
