Basic Track Set-Up

What things would you do if you were purchasing a Z4M for daily purposes and wanted to have a well set-up car for the track on occasional track days?

Plans so far are for KW V3 coilovers which will work for street/track purposes and a set of track wheels/tires.

I also assume a set of brake lines and better brake fluid will be a given. What about a set of pads to swap in/out for track days (what are recommended)?

An alignment?

What else would you suggest? Thanks in advance!

My suggestion? Swap fluid and run the car as it is for the first track day.

Once you know its faults, you can improve.

Do you know how to adjust compression and rebound settings based off of how the car is acting? If so, good. If not, then you're not ready for vs, IMO

Yes...I'm by no means an expert, but have some decent track time in the past. Have also had KWs on a couple cars.

CR edition? Nice.

Anyways, typically our cars like to see -3*+ on the track. I'm currently at -2.2* at 0 toe and really like the turn-in, but still have a lot of outside wear.

Upgraded brake lines IMO are not needed, but pads would be extremely helpful. I've been running Super Blue with HP+ pads with the first couple track days. Now after 3 Days I need to go to dedicated track pads (I'm thinking PFC08s)

As far as wheels, APEX makes great lightweight, track proven wheels. You can squeeze 265 squared with enough camber and some spacers up front or run a staggered setup like OEM

I forgot to add, I've played around with -1/8th total toe in the rear and the rear end way too anxious to walk out on me, and could never get on throttle at apex.

I went to -1/4th total toe in the rear with my rear camber pulled all the way out (I forget my value) and now at -1/8th on each wheel, the car is such more planted at braking and on gas. I can get on the gas much more early now at apex as opposed to before

Appreciate the feedback. I figure I will buy a set of track dedicated pads that I will swap in/out for track days.

Non-staggered turned into the way to go for the S2000 and wondered if it'd be the same for the Z4M. I'll probably start with a staggered set of 18" volks based on what I've read about staggered vs. non-staggered on the Z4M.

In my opinion? You don't need to do ANYTHING. Especially for a car that's mostly going to see street driving and occasional track time. The MZ4 Coupe is plenty capable fresh from the factory to churn some pretty fast laps.

The chassis is already borderline too stiff for mostly street use, the springs and shocks are actually quite decent, at least one of the stiffest I've ever driven straight from BMW. Track pads and track tires would be all I'd do given your original statement about occasional track use. I'd save the coil-overs for something that sees more than a dozen track days a year, or a car that's parked in the garage most of the time and used mainly for having fun.

My plan is to daily drive this for a period of time and modify it towards becoming a weekend/track car.

My plans rarely work out the way I expect them to with cars.

Kw coilovers are a bit soft for tracking IMO. I drove in a coupe with v3's and I prefer my h&r coilovers. Stiffer and more sporty ride. The kw's just felt like they were good for street use.

I've also heard this opinion

I'm running 18x9 volk te-37s, with 265/35/18 yokahama advan ad08 which are very wide for their size. Love the setup

Anyone know the spring rates for KWs?

You can just replace the springs with KW dampers, they are really an awesome damper

im more than happy with the progressive rears, the CSL cup series still run a progressive spring in the rear here in the UK.... if its good enough for them, it certainly is for me!!
Sadly with the uk roads.... they feel rather uncomfortable.
