If not DIY'ing I would take it directly to a good indy BMW mechanic and have them check it out to see if the motor is ok before you start driving it around. Looks to be in good shape cosmetically from the photo. Good luck. Out of curiosity, how many miles are on the clock?

80000 miles. I don't plan on driving it until I remove the head and check the drained oil for metal shavings. I'm hoping all I need to do is replace and head gasket and maybe machine the head.

probably a vynilwrap ( or how do you write that in proper english), as that is def a dutch car, and wrapping is kinda hot overhere.
for 2.5k you bought you're self a great deal, you have a lot left to spend on it, maybe get an engine swap ( maybe an S54 or 3.0 ) done by a good shop.

Nothing wrong with a 2.5 ; the other two just have more power. The 2.5 has a 0-60 of about 7 sec the 3.0 6 sec. (Depends on who did the testing )
So with the 2.5 you are looking at miata type speed. |

i have a 2.5 as the 3.0 was to expensive (for my budget) to buy 4 years ago, i enjoy it every day, and i think it's quicker than a stock miata.
but as you're engine was probably damaged, why not opt for a 3.0 of a S54? 3.0 wil probably just fit nicely as the 2.5 an 3.0 are the same on the outside ( you can swap internal parts to make a M54B25 into a M54B30.). butt then you'll better swap gearbox and drive train too, as the 3.0 had a 6 speed.
