Just moved to LA from Illinois and am working on getting my insurance transferred over. After experiencing the sticker shock from talking to the local State Farm agent (who I currently use) I am now looking to shop around a bit before I commit, but I'm not sure how much better I'll be able to do.

Here's what I was paying before for my 2 cars:

2007 BMW M Coupe
2006 BMW 330ci
6-mo premium $911.16

Both have the same coverage:
100/300/50 for liability
100/300 for uninsured motorist
$100 comprehensive deductible
$500 collision deductible
$25/day, max $600 for car rental

I'm 28, no accidents or tickets in the last 5 years. Only claim in the history of my policy was a comprehensive claim for a nasty rock chip from road debris on bumper/hood.

With a worse deductible ($1000 for collision), I am looking at about $1500 every 6 months in CA. I could get a $275/year renter's insurance policy that will give me a multi-line discount to reduce my rate to about $1350/6-mo.

What's worse, my motorcycle insurance is almost tripled in cost (~$400/yr to almost $1200/yr) if I keep the same coverages...

Does this seem reasonable to CA folks?

Get an insurance broker and they will do all the work for you. They shop for you and give you the comparisons. Anyone who advertises on TV cost more!

I used to use Geico, and Progressive 20 years ago before anyone knew who they were.

Insurance information is useless unless you can find someone with the exact same information as you, including where you live and your history.

I pay $251 every 6 months with $1000 deductible.

I pay $764 a year. Of course, this policy includes homeowner and muti-car discount.

My family pays a total of about $1,200 every half year for coverage on four cars and part of our house through Farmer's insurance.

The M coupe is the only one with comprehensive coverage, as all the other cars are worth $10k or less now, and not really worth covering.

So if I were to keep it simple and divide by four, that's approximately $300 for my car every half year or $600 for a full year for comprehensive coverage (that's around $50 / month). I just use my parents' and older brother's names and clean driving history as well as multi-car + all these other kinds of discounts in order to try and keep insurance rates low.

Last I checked, my deductible on the M coupe was $500. I'm currently age 24.

I also moved from Illinois about 5 years ago, via the Bay Area and now socal. You definitely get sticker shock on insurance prices when you move out here. I saw my rates drop the most from 28-30. My S2000 at the time went from $580/6 months in IL to $1200/6 months in the Bay Area. Now I'm back to normal rates. I'm at $650/6 months for a Z4 3.0Si and an IS350. I use Geico. Best service and rates in Cali from what I've seen. Depending on your history Wawanessa has good rates too, but I get better rates from Geico.

Basically, your rates have lots of other factors to consider. Like someone said, you have to find someone with the exact same policy with all other things similar/same. I got a huge discount by staying with Geico for just a year. Also for multiple car, good driver, good student, clean record, etc. All depends.

42 years old, spotless record in the last 5 years (not so spotless before that!), $1,000 deductible and I'm paying roughly $300/6 months. We also have State Farm and have several vehicles, homes, umbrella policy with them.
