Question Driveline Click

Hey, I just got this car, my second BMW. It's a '04 Z4 3.0i with just a tick over 100,000 miles. Overall no problems, a fantastic improvement over my old 318ti, anyway I've started hearing this weird noise.

I'm getting a weird click that sounds to be coming from the rear diff right when I come off the line or if I switch back and forth between first and reverse. I can replicate the noise by keeping the car in low revs in first and alternately speeding up/engine braking with the clutch out.

I'm kinda worried that it's the universal joint, which I've heard cannot be replaced without replacing the whole prop shaft.

Any input would be great.

Thanks.

might be better off searching for this issue on e46fanatics.com. a lot of guys on there with higher mileage that might have had the same issue

Could also be something as minor as your brake pads shifting. On a car with that much mileage, I'm sure the brake pads have been changed and if they went something other than OEM, the backing plate may be a "universal fit" that doesn't 100% fit every application it's designed for.

Cool, I know the guy replaced the rear brakes just before I bought it so i'll check that out. I'll also repost over on the e46 boards.
