My opinion, if the car isn't moving and there is ZERO drop in rpm, nothing is even slightly engaging.

That's my opinion, yes. I'm not a master tech though.

I have the stop and don't worry about it.

So after reading this post, I decided to get the clutch stop. After trying to remove the factory clutch stop, the head broke off the stud :S . Now i got a piece in there that I have to remove before installing the adjustable clutch stopper. What is the best way of doing this?

First of all, thanks for reviving this thread. I just picked up a 2007 Z4 coupe and the long clutch throw is one of the things on my list to "see about". I placed my order already!

Now to your issue. Yikes! Hope that doesn't happen to me. Two things I can think of for removing a snapped off stud:
  • if there is anything sticking out at all, clamp it with a pair of vice grips and turn it out - be sure to make the VCs ultra tight
  • drill it and pull it with a stud extractor. Not easy and not fun, plus if you don't have an extractor you have additional expense

Good luck!

Thanks. I just picked up my Z4 Coupe 3.0si a couple months ago. My 1st mod was the ZHP shift knob. It is weighted and shorter and feels much better than stock. I'll try what you said. No stud sticking out. I should have been a bit more careful removing it. Was excited about installing this new stopper..lol. It's in a real awkward location so it should be fun!..lol

So I was able to remove the broken stud. The stud is actually hollow so i found a screw head bit that fit relatively tight in there and applied some crazy glue to the head and sides of it. Therefore when i stuck it in the hollow hole of the stud it bonded it it. Then easily unscrewed it. It cost me some crazy glue and an old screw head but got it done.

I installed the clutch stop from eBay http://www.ebay.ca/itm/BMW-Clutch-St...fa39ca&vxp=mtr

Not sure if anyone else has this. I installed it in all the way, then rotated back out 360 degrees twice. Felt better. My take offs were smoother. Anyone else using the same one? How may 360 degree rotations back out have you guys done for optimal feel?

Congratulations! I noticed in some of the pictures that the stud appeared to be hollow, so I was hoping that would simplify removal. Sounds like it did.

As for adjustment, I've only scanned the thread but I believe there are two things you want to consider. People with more experience please chime in!

First, you need to be certain that the clutch pedal can move far enough to fully disengage the clutch. You should be able to test this on a very flat, smooth surface. At a complete standstill, press the clutch in and select first gear. It should slide right in without grinding or resistance, AND the car should not start to move.

Second, you want to be sure the clutch pedal can move far enough to overcome the safety switch that allows the car to be started. With the ignition switch on, engine OFF, press the clutch pedal. I believe folks say that you will hear a distinct click when the pedal moves far enough to activate the relay.

I can't believe all the people shelling out $10 for this thing! Pretty sure mine cost less than a buck and I made it myself with just 2 things from the hardware store. Super easy and it has been going strong for 7 years!

One comment on adjustment is that if it is very close to the threshold of the starter engagement switch it might work fine when the car/ambient air temperature but may not work when everything is hot (personal experience).

I have had the same experience. Also may not work when the car has sat outside in the summer heat. I got into the habit last summer of unscrewing the clutch stop, starting the car, then screwing it back in. I need to do the magnet switch adjustment.

When my car doesn't initially start on a hot summer day (due to clutch switch), I first try to push the clutch in with more force and try to restart my car. So far that has worked every time.

Glad this post got revived! I always kept my 300Z clutch adjusted to right off the floor and one of my first Z4 google sessions involved how to adjust the clutch - no dice. Then I see this and ordered it immediately and installed it last night in about 5 minutes - awesome! And FAR easier than having my feet sticking out of the T-tops and my head jammed under the dash adjusting the clutch on my old 300 for sure!

Backed it out till the car would not start and turned it back in about a turn. Best thing was I did not test drive it and was distracted this morning and forgot about it, so when I pulled out of the garage I was like "hey......" and got a natural reaction.

WELL worth it and along with the CVD delete and weighted knob - the cars feels so much better than when I bought it.

Thanks for the great recommend as always!

Hawkeye, what did you actually use? That thread doesn't give that detail.

Cheers

Installed mine last week and took the car to work the next day. I must say I'm impressed with how much of a difference in driving pleasure and convenience such a simple change can make. Happy camper!

Now I'm off to search for "CVD delete". And I was so looking forward to having a car that needed little to nothing in the way of mods.

Gotcha!

Like many others,I was shocked at the improved feel of the clutch after putting the clutch stop in this weekend. 10 mins of trial and error and I think I found a sweet spot where I don't have to worry about the clutch failing to engage and not starting. Can't believe it took almost 3 years to do this. Gotta tackle the cdv now.

Has it already been discussed if there is a way to bypass or eliminate the magnetic position switch? I have seen the how-to for repositioning it, but if I could get rid of it I would like that.
