New CSL wheels installed -Tire Light On
I just installed a new set of CSL wheels, reset the tire light and drove off on the maiden voyage. Within a mile or two the tire inflation light started blinking and then came on solid. I have owned BMW's and Mini's and have swapped wheels from OEM to track only wheels and after resetting the light it normally goes out. Do I have to take the TPMS from the stock wheels and install in the aftermarket wheels? Dumb ass question so be gentle!

Yep. Its a 'monitoring' system. If there are no sensors, inherently the car thinks all the tires are flat!! Another set of TPMS are typically around 250-300.

So I should take the snows off the OEM wheels, take the TPMS off and then reinstall in new CSL set? Why only on my MCoupe when I have changed many wheels off of earlier Minis and BMW's and only reset the tire inflation light.

Apparently the old systems based the warning on the rotation of the tires, i.e. low pressure results in a small diameter and faster rotation. The new system actually uses a sensor mounted as part of the valve stem. I believe its the 07 and newer Z4s that have the actual sensors in the wheel. I would prefer the old system so I don't have to drive around all summer with the tire light on but I'm not paying for a new set of TPMS sensors

That being said, I even picked up a used set of TPMS units just for my track wheels. I got all 4 units for only $100 total from a board member so I know deals are to be found.

It's not BMW's fault. They're just complying with the new regulations. Europeans Z4's don't use the same TPMS.

Just so we're all clear, this regulation exists in the US due to the increase in popularity of Run-Flat tires. For safety-sake, it's important to know that your tires are flat before you go speeding down the highway at 90MPH and lose control...

Oh well, I guess it is what it is. Still disappointing and just made it a lot less motivating for me to buy a summer set of wheels and tires soon. |

I have had the warning light on now for the second day and I find it a little distracting. I will look for a second set of TPMS sensors on the forums or Ebay. Not realizing this was stupid on my part.

**********s sells a set but its close to 325$ US for a new set. Previous implementations of TPMS prior to 2007 I believe did not have a sensor in the wheel, but instead relied on the ABS sensor and the number of tire rotations to determine if there was pressure loss from a tire. The light could be easily cleared by holding the (!) button down for a few seconds in these systems. |
