Longer than usual to fire up in lower ambient temperature?
My '08 Z4MC is a Southern Cal car and sleeps in the garage. It usually takes 0.5-1 second to fire up (unless it's parked and not driven for more than a week). On my recent road trip to Northern Cal with the car parked outside overnights, where temperature dips into the high 30s to low 40s (*F), I noticed that it takes an unusually longer time to fire up (somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 to 3 seconds before it fires up).
Is this a sign of the battery about to go bad or is this just the nature of the 10W60 oil? The battery is about 3 years old and is on a tender whenever the car sits longer than a week. Appreciates any input. Thanks. |

Colder temps are a battery killer. Mine are always slower to start in the winter.

I think it has more to do with a change in expected conditions. During the winter when my car is regularly subjected to sub-freezing temps it starts just fine. It is when there is a drastic condition change, such as starting it on a cold morning after it was last run on an unusually warm day that throws it for a loop a little.

That's true. The S54 always takes a bit longer to start compared to my M54 X5. The M54 just fires up almost instantly every single time regardless of ambient temperatures. That's why it somewhat surprised me to see different crank times for the S54 (ambient temperature dependent).
