Bimmerworld Clutchmasters /JB Racing LTW Flywheel Combo (Non-M)

Anyone have experience with this setup? I just ordered the "stage 1" combo with organic clutch. I'm wondering if there's anything I should watch out for, break in limitations, etc.

It disintegrating in the first 200 miles. If this is on you're blown car I strongly advise you no . A JB lightweight flywheel caused so much vibration in my Z4M , that an OEM Sachs clutch backing plate broke apart on the street . The crank was vibrating enough to cause my belts to slip off the pulleys . This all happened within 400 miles of street driving , and failure of the clutch occurred on the first redline shift after break in.

So... worked like a charm?

That's not good.

It's on the non-M (285 whp), so I hope my experience is a little better. My biggest concern is the vibration. The M54 has crankshaft harmonics issues at high rpm, which cause the oil pump nut to back out. I haven't been able to confirm if the lightweight flywheel will make it worse.

Was your clutch sprung hub?

Yes it was the high frequency vibration from the flywheel that caused all the chaos, and yes it was a Sachs HD sprung hub clutch . They have never seen a failure like mine on that clutch ( it's OEM ) .

I had a stage 2 clutch masters on my track e30 m3 with JB fly wheel. It had vibration at 3000 rims deceleration. Others had the same issue, others not. I have run a JB flywheel on the e30 m3 for years only tracking on a stock clutch without issue since.

That being said, listen to George or find out what the track cars that are similar are using. If it works on track, it will work on the street.

Thanks for all the replies, especially George. I decided to have the combo installed earlier this week and have put several hundred miles on the car since then. I was initially hesitant to proceed with the install based on what's been written here, but am VERY happy with the results. The only vibration I get is when lugging the engine around in high gear below 2k rpm, which you shouldn't be doing anyway. The standard chatter at idle is there, which I've made a few videos to show. The car sounds a little like a diesel from the outside in neutral and at idle. Otherwise, I've seen a huge improvemt in driveability. Rev matching is easier, and I can upshift without pause. The slop in the OEM clutch is gone. I'll post a full review soon.

I really like the clutch feel too until it exploded lol. But hopefully the lower rpms' of the 3.0i will keep you safe harmonics wise. I may have just received a slightly out of balance flywheel from JB racing , it doesn't take much at 8k rpm to cause problems. Just make sure you're harmonic balancer on the crank is new or in very good shape.

The M54 is a quick revving engine to begin with, does the lightened flywheel make it even quicker revving?

I had a 74 Jensen healey with the Lotus 2.0 in it , which was no slouch when it came to revving. With a lightened flywheel you could feel a world of difference.

I have had a JB clutch and LTW flywheel on my MCoupe for over 50k miles without any problems. Mine is so smooth I have to pay attention to stay off the rev limiter in 2nd and 3rd gear. It spins up so fast and smooth that the redline comes up quickly.

Mine has been trouble free for the first 1500 miles. I may get idle rpm raised a bit to cut out the chatter. The car is so much easier to drive smoothly.

When it comes time to replace my clutch I am not sure if I would go with a lightened flywheel etc. The 3.73 gears bring the revs up so quick already.

Update: Still in love with this setup. Chatter at idle is a bit annoying, but that's the only negative effect I've noticed. Everything else is dramatically improved. I would do this again for feel alone, even if there was no performance gain.

Dammit! Move out to Cali so I can drive your beasties and not have to buy the same mods
