I know this is random, but who better to ask!!

So I have been in the market to buy a motorcycle, and to be honest, I'm currently torn between two choices. I wanted a sport bike, but when I saw the insurance costs and everything, this just made more sense. I have until the 31st of this month to qualify for the deal I am getting. Both bikes are within a few hundred dollars of each other when all is said and done. I'm just looking for some good opinions on what to do. help?

The blue is a bit more classic, the silver has sportier cues (notice the short rear fender and the lower handlebars).

I like the Iron 833 better from those two bikes.

I would check around for insurance rates on bikes, I thought the same thing but I moved to State Farm and it is actually really cheap!

I have a 2008 Yamaha R6 with full coverage, 500 deductible and pay only $206.76 a year. I am 25 now though. Before I turned 25 (recently) I was still only paying $508.60 a year!

But you live in Iowa, and he lives in NYC. Insurance is going to be more than $200/yr.

To OP, are you stuck on getting a H/D cruiser or would you consider a Yamaha (more reliable and easier maintenance, cheaper)? Also have you thought about a slightly used one ('07) to get the price down, or a better model for similar price.

I realize it is going to be more in NYC, but it is not as expensive as most would think if you get the right company.

I pay more to insure my 1991 Mustang LX (slow version) with liability only than I do to insure my motorcycle. I know what he is talking about though because Allstate and another company (can't remember which one) quoted me ~$2,500 a year to insure the bike before I found State Farm. I would have thought $1,000 was cheap at that point in time.

this is interesting news. I'm definitely going to call them later and check it out. Geico gave me a 2600 a year quote for the entry yamaha FZ6R. To the other guy: my whole family has Harleys so i kinda got pushed into it after the sport bike deal fell through. I've driven both a yamaha cruiser and a harley, and I like the fact that the H-D is a smaller bike with more power. The smaller bikes on the yamaha line are too underpowered for me, and the bigger bikes are not comfortable for me.

Anyway, Thanks hawkeye, now I have to call around. But I too am leaning towards the Iron I THINK lol.

IMO I like the 1st bike, looks more classic - both are nice though, good luck with whatever you decide.

Yeah, Geico wouldn't insure me on a motorcycle cause I have a speeding ticket... lame.

I toyed with getting a cruiser over a sportbike as well as both of my parents are thinking about getting cruisers. I just love the agility and style of the sportbikes though.

Neither, get a BMW!

Sporters are notoriously underpowered and the lack of wind protection will drive you bonkers after 50 miles. I notice you live in NYC, get something with some wind protection so you can extend the riding season a few more months. Heated grips and seats are a beautiful option when it gets cold.

Even if you are not a beginner make sure that you get something with ABS, believe me you will go down one day and ABS could save your life. I've been down once in 25 years and I'm 100% sure that ABS would have prevented that fall (coolant on freeway overpass).

I have nothing against Harley's but there are far better options out there for about the same amount of money IMHO.

1) Suzuki V-Strom 650 ABS
2) BMW F650GS ABS

If you really want a sportbike you might consider a Euro bike, most I know who ride Triumph Daytona 675's considered other 600 class bikes but since the Japanese models are favored by the younger crowd who crashes more and those models tend to get stolen more for parts for that crowd they tend have higher premiums. Most of the Euro bikes are somewhat off that kind of radar of the insurance companies. I know many who went with Triumph or Ducati for that reason. I have a Triumph Sprint.

The only H-D that I really like is the XR1200 Sportster but both of those look pretty good.

oh shit, iron 883 thats the bike I want!! but in flat black. haha

I guess it depends on what style you are after. if you want the bobber look, iron 883 is the one to get. You can always upgrade the 883 to 1200 level later on.

(watch it in HD)

I guessed you would come to that conclusion. You want a Harley and that's all you will settle for. Let me ask you this question, would you buy a BMW 1 Series? That's the equivalent of a Sportster in the Harley world.

Actually, within the past model year the Triumph Daytona 675 became one of the BEST super sport bikes, and is definitely on the same playing field as it's Japanese counterparts now. I know a lot of younger people that are choosing the Daytona over ZXs, YZFs and CBRs (and even Gixxers)

Harley Davidsons have no power whatsoever. They may as well have training wheels on them. You want the best of both worlds...get a Ducati Monster. It's a cruiser styled sport bike with a fantastic frame which equals great handling and road manners, has a 90-degree fuel injected v-twin and the world's best motorcycling sound. Oh, and they are quite fast and powerful...especially the 900s. Harley's do nothing well. Japanese bikes are a dime a dozen and nothing but boring...

Yes, because they both have flat powerbands with no power up top...but some off idle grunt. Equals: boring!

I'd get the Iron 883 no questions. AND I hate harley's... sooooo many better bikes out there (BMW, Ducati, triumph) but for 7k to get a brand new Sportster that looks like that!! Can't go wrong. Never buy anything japanese if you can help it (except cameras and your wife's car)

Edit: toyota 4x4's too
Edit: btw, you're never going to look as cool as the d-bag in the 883 commercial.
Edit: Japanese working girls

OK...I'm gonna get some heat for this...but the 883 was meant to take the girl off the back and put her in her own bike. Sexist yes...but hey this is Harley we are talking about.

If you want to stay with the brand, spend a little more and get the Dyna. Same look, but more of a 'real' Harley

I think the 883 was meant to be chopped and modded. You can get the power of a 1200 but pay the insurance of a 883.
