Top Covers

I just purchased an 05 Z4 with a manual top I purchased this out of state and on the test drive the top was down and locked in place but when I drove it on the next nice day and put the top down it will not lock down in place went to the dealership and they told me it was missing a piece and it would be 850.00 to repair it. The top functions fine but it will blow up about 2" when driven. Wondering if those top covers would hold it down?

I'm thinking that they probably won't; they are held down by plastic clips that you slide underneath the arms when it is down, and while snug, I doubt that they would force the top down. BTW guys, if you're looking for these in beige, I picked some up at bmwpartsunlimited.com for $38 or so.

I purchased a set last fall in Beige too for $38 - Go figure and made them black to match the interior. I don't understand why beige is so cheap and black is full price ?

Supply and demand I guess. I just bought the black ones, they look nice though I wish they actually matched the color and texture of the top, and that the lock knobs would be hidden.

I have always thought of buying a set. Do those of you who have them, use them a lot. Just seems they would be good for longer drives or running around on the weekend, but somewhat a hassle just for the ride home from work.

I hadn't ever thought about covering/wrapping them. I wonder how nappa leather would look to match my extended leather?

I just ordered a set for myself too! I have a beige interior with a black top, not sure if I want to leave them as is or make 'em black.

Do these cut down on the wind noise at all? Seems like with the smoother surface they might a little.

As much as I like these, I just know I'll break 'em within the first week of ownership by forgetting that they are on there and wanting to put the top up when I get to a restaurant with the wife. Do like the look of them on, though.

Yeah, I haven't used mine a lot, but would if I was doing long drives or whatnot. I have the black top as well, and I think the beige looks fine; the way that I see it, they are color matched to the trim, not to the top, so you should buy them based on your interior. This would be particularly important if you had a beige top and black interior (dunno why you would, but who am i to question it?)

Does anyone know where I can obtain a close match for nappa leather? Thinking of getting a set of the tan and covering them with black nappa to match my extended leather.

Well there are only 3 colors (to match the soft top colors) so I would guess black if you have the black interior or a black top.

The beige ones are black plastic covered in textured beige material. I would imagine the covers for the black interior are the same. You could probably remove the materiel and cover it in whatever you want.

I kind of meant a close leather match to the leather in our cars.

Well the covers were designed more to match the top and not the interior of the car, hence the only colors being black, gray, and beige. If basic black isn't good enough you'll have to just recover them.

edit: after looking on realoem most of the rear trim was the same for all years and models of the Z4 roadster, also available in just black, beige, and I guess gray. So whatever.

Thanks to all of you, but WhoU4 certainly. The pictures are fantastic. Wasn't sure about how these would look. Funny part is our car's are the same color, so it was like looking at them right on my own. Thanks again.

S356ster,

No problem, just a little contribution to the site. I've learned quite a bit from others here and sharing is what it's all about.

Glad it helped.

I got the tan covers for Christmas from my brother and he covered them in black lambs skin. It looks pretty good, but after seeing it in person I think it would have looked better in some cloth/canvas that would be close to the softtop material.

I will try to post pics tomorrow.

Several of you have mentioned the possibility of breaking the tabs. I have popped my roof up a couple of times and not broken the tabs, forgetting the inserts were there. The tabs fit under the scissor part so as they go up, it simply un-hooks and falls out of the car. I am not recommending do this on a regular basis, but I don't believe tab breakage will be much of a issue. Scratching them up or your paint while falling out might be more of a issue.

Also if you have not picked up on this yet but the tabs also greatly reduce the wind noise when inserted.

Happy Motoring.

I would love to find a set of these in black if anyone knows where they might be obtained or has any for sale.

Any information would be most welcome.

Found a set on ebay, Pricy but they do exist.
