Considering I have 30 years and over 850,000 miles of BMW ownership, I can sincerely say that car has years and years and years of life left in it. I bought my 2008 Coupe 3 years ago with 23,000 miles on it and have just changed the oil and driveline juices. It now has 75,000 miles on it. The N52 is easy a 300,000+ mile engine even with BMW's extended oil change intervals, I can attest to this because I have 2006 E90 with 338,000 miles. Other than the wimpy cupholders on the Z4, the car is pretty damned robust. The car Finnegan linked to will need nothing but oil changes and tires; it won't need hoses, a belt, spark plugs, or anything else for years. If you really want to waste some money, by the Z4 and get an aftermarket warranty if it makes you feel better and find a dealer or private shop that provides a loaner car.

I drive my 2008 75,000-mile Z4 350 miles a week; it alternates DD duties with the E90. I drive the E90 450 miles a week and it has 7 times the mileage the Blue 3.0si you could buy tomorrow. That's if I don't go get it on Tuesday...

Or, just get a Subie FRS or a Miata and call it a day. Both cars can be had new, with a warranty, for $30K USD.

My 2 cents.
I do have limited experience with.bmws but I do have experience with other older cars and the reality is they break down more than newer cars. I value the peace of mind and no hassles of newer cars...even with my 3.0si with only 35000 miles little things started to go in its 6th year and getting them repaired is still a hassle. i guess i prefer low maintenance in both my cars and women

Unfortunately I don't think there's anything out there that will tic all the boxes for you, and it's only going to get worse with the way car design is headed.

That's one of the reasons that I jumped on an E92 M3 when the right one came along.
Does it tic all the boxes for me? .....definitely not, but it does tic most of them.
That high revving S65 was at the top of the list, last true NA M car
appreciate the sympathy

not having a car that really resonates with you is a real loss for a car nut

i almost feel like just getting an "ok" car like a golf gti and packing in the car passion and focusing on other things...

Thinking a bit outside the box, one of these, if you can find one for sale.

A few thousand added in gets you a great handling rare (1200 made) car with close to 400 bhp (1/4 = 12.9) And 30 mpg when you keep your foot out of it.

My 3.0si has the same mileage as yours; it will be 12 years old in June and has consistently been significantly more reliable than some new cars I've owned. And a heckuva lot more fun and way better looking.

One of 1266 Pontiac Solstice coupes made. 2.0 Ecotec engine, very easily modified. Some owners are running up toward 500 bhp. I'm no longer that young and crazy!

Stock car is slower than my Z4M but modified is faster than the M. Both are great fun. Solstice is a couple of hundred pounds lighter and also a good handling chassis with some minor mods. Make nice pair. Getting hard to find now as people aren't selling them.

Ironically, I bought the Solstice in 2009 when I couldn't find a used Z4MC for sale - no one was selling them!

I'm assuming that the Soltice coupe's interior is exactly the same size as the Soltice Roadster. My sister had a Sky (same as Soltice), and the cabin space is too small. I'm only 5'10 and there's not enough space for my legs to stretch out or even to move to the sides. My sisters husband is 6'1 and he totally hated that car for the space available

The cabin is actually bigger in the coupe as the trunk area becomes part of the cabin. It is acoustically apparent and results in much less feeling of 'closeness' As far as the seating position, I think you'll find in any car that the first time you get in a strange car you sit up higher and feel more compressed than you will with familiarity - you slouch and settle in to a seat and your head no longer brushes the roof etc. The Solstice seems fine for many 6'+ owners.

I also found the leg space seemed confining when I first bought the car but that passed and it now seems natural and almost roomy. Guess it's what you get used to. You want confined, try a Lotus Europa or Seven, or a Bugeye Sprite sometime! Or even my MGA coupe, which has short doors and requires either some degree of limberness or the necessity of decanting yourself unceremoniously onto the pavement in front of amused bystanders.

If you can find a low mileage honey- the E92 M3 may be the answer! 414hp of naturally aspirated high revving goodness! Carries four people if need be. Happy hunting.

Thats what I did & lovin' it so far.
The biggest downside to the E92M3 is the weight.

Purchase the beloved Z4M and then overcome reliability by spending $ to update it with proven aftermarket performance parts (brakes, suspension, clutch, connecting rod bearings, VANOS, water pump, alternator, starter)....this expense is WAY below the cost of an Evora, etc and creates a customized ride.

Update, the m240i is pretty sweet

So I haven't yet found a modern z4 coupe but the m240i is a great little car.

I test drove a m240ixdrive yesterday with the zf 8 speed transmission and was very impressed. The engine is an absolute peach with butttery smooth instant power and torque. It reminds of the n52 in its balanced smoothness. it also has very little turbo lag. if they put the b58 engine in the new supra with a manual...then that will be pretty close to a modern z4 coupe... The transmission is direct and immediate in its shifts. The compact proportions of the car are perfect.

I really liked the car (I didn't walk away smiling like I did with the ftype, but the f type has been ruled out for practicality considerations).

I am close to placing an order, but the thought crossed my mind that I should perhaps at least compare it to the c43...which is a little pricier but in the same ballpark.

would welcome any thoughts on comparisons of the c43 with the m240i

The 240i is a fantastic car the 2-series a great platform. Higher seating position, electronic steering disconnect and muted feel really separate it from older platforms though. Moreover, that turbo engine offers little character compared to the /M engines of yore.

The 228i my wife and I owned was a stellar street car and the M2 provides even more thrills, however it faltered as a possible replacement for my own Z4M.

Have you driven the C43? I would take that any day over the M240. Who wouldn't want an AMG motor in their car? To me the M240 isn't a real M car....

No help whatsoever, but I'm hoping this guy makes it across the pond. Ticks all the boxes:

- Reliable, easy to source parts engine (with tons of horsepower).
- 2756 pounds! that's as light as a GT86 twin.
- Manual.

Plus it doesn't hurt that Gordon Murray designed it (the same guy that did the mclaren f1).

TVR hahahahahaha! Lovely, ish, and utterly garbage. Even the English shrug and wish owners the best.
