Z4 Convertible Top Wind Noise (Visible Air Gap!)

I have a 06 Z4M which to me has a ridiculous amount of wind noise at highway speeds with the top up. At first I said "We it is a rag top after all" and then one day I was sitting in traffic with the top up and noticed that I could see daylight between the lower leading edge of the top and the rear edge of the A-Pillar.

Please note that the gap is very small and is the same on both sides of the car. Also this is only at the bottom of the mating surfaces while the top is tight. Upon closer inspection I noticed that I could see the top of the window and a small 1/16" gap between the top/front of the window and the seals. At speed this creates wind noise and is rather annoying. I am sure this is the location of the noise b/c while at speed I took a cloth and held it up into that area and the car was MUCH quieter. Does anyone have any tips or fixes?

Thank you!

Christian,

When you close either of the doors , the window glass should slide up to meet the rubber molding in the door. If this is not happening, then you need to reset the window memory. I've attached a link with the procedure below.

I am having the same problem with my car, but my windows slide up when I open the door.

The window goes all the way to the top, there is just a gap where the seals meet on both sides. If the bottom of the seal on either the a-pillar or the top was longer, I would not have any issues.

It sounds like you need to adjust the latches which lock the top down on the header. If you see a gap all the way around, it is too loose. Mine doesn't have this issue.

A photo of the problem would help folks here to figure out the root cause of this.

In the meantime, does the front of the roof fit down snug and tight along the top of the windshield frame?

From his post it sounds to me like it does not. He said he sees daylight at the leading edge of the top. This makes me think it needs to be tightened. I agree a photo would be helpful.

Does anyone recall a thread that discussed a treatment for dry door seals? I know they can be repositioned a little but there was a well-subscribed thread that talked about a product that seemed to revitalize them, make 'em pliant, renew the good seal, etc.

Snake-oil or good stuff? Don't know... can't recall the verdict. I was just interested in re-reading the thread and thought it might be part of this discussion too.

I believe the product is called Gummi-Pflege. Both the company and BMW sell it. I believe the BMW part # is 82 149 407 015.

I use it on all my cars once a year. Does a good job conditioning the seals.

BMW no longer sells gummi-pflege (which means rubber care in german it's a generic term). There reason is it contained silicone which will actually weaken your seals over time.

BMW now sells and recommends a fluoride based lubricant called carbaflow 83 23 0 309 627. It's expensive for a tiny tube FYI.
