smg transmission question
Hello all,
i just got a 2005 z4 3.0 with smg transmission. I have noticed that when cold, it lurches from 1st to second in drive mode for about 15 minutes until the car has warmed up. Is that normal? MG |

it only shifts to second past 10mph or 2k rpm i believe.... maybe you are trying to shift a little early?

How many miles? Has it been serviced on schedule?

Have the same car; can't really say I've noticed a change in behavior after 15 minutes, but it's not a daily driver and I generally shift manually.
In order to help the trans shift (match engine speeds), esp 1-2, it's necessary to let up on the gas a little as it shifts to keep it smooth. Obviously this isn't necessary or desired with max throttle. The sport button will change the characteristics also, try it. If you're at Buttonwillow this weekend, I'll let you drive mine (not on track) to compare. |

if you bought a car with SMG you should be driving in "manual" mode at all times.
it is a sequential MANUAL gearbox

Yea...you should ALWAYS drive it in manual---that,s why it has an automatic function, too.
After rethinking your post, could you be trying to say that the car lurches in 1st when cold only before shifting into 2nd? I HAVE noticed this on my car(s). I also had a 2003 3.0 smg. |

thanks
thanks for the comments. This problem only happens when the car is warming up. Then it goes away. I spoke with the guys at the dealership (this is a warrantied pre owned car) where I bought the car and they said this is typical of the smg transmission. I was just checking to make sure. Otherwise, I love the car.
One other thing, does anyone know if the cdv works with the smg transmission, is it worth adding on, and does it void the warranty of the vehicle? |

I have no idea what effect it would have on an smg equipped car, but it would definitely void the warranty relative to the clutch.

The automatic function is there because it has to be. Because without that there would be some whiney trophy wife complainers. The SMG is meant to be driven like a manual, which is why the auto mode drives TERRIBLY.

Alright, I'll be fairly serious.
Yes, I owned a 2003 3.0 smg sport (pre software upgrade) and currently a 2005 3.0 smg sport. I drive in manual mode; my wife (not sure if she would consider "trophy" designation as insult or compliment, hopefully she won't see this post) uses auto. I admit the auto function (although improved on the '05, maybe just the software upgrade) is not stellar, but I would not tell someone never to use it. Come to think of it, she has been getting a bit whiney lately about the brake noise from driving Hawk blue compound track brake pads on the street. |
